Chapter 3 - The Desk Drawer Revelation

Arthur stared down at the small silver key resting in the center of his palm, its jagged teeth catching the amber light of the hallway lamp.
His mind raced back through the years, cataloging every memory he shared with Sarah, the woman whose gentle smile still lingered in the fading photographs lining the staircase.
He looked up, but Elena had already vanished down the dimly lit corridor toward the master bedroom, the soft whisper of her gold wrap dress fading into the quiet hum of the house.
Clutching the key like a weapon, Arthur walked briskly down the hall to his home office, a cramped room smelling of old paper, pipe tobacco, and lingering neglect.
The heavy mahogany desk sat in the corner, its surface cluttered with unpaid bills, half-finished architectural blueprints, and a collection of stray pens.
Kneeling on the hardwood floor, Arthur inserted the key into the brass lock of the bottom drawer.
It turned with a smooth, oiled click that sounded entirely too loud in the silent house.
He pulled the drawer open, expecting to find the velvet jewelry box where Sarah’s silver locket—and a stack of old love letters—had rested untouched since the funeral.
Instead, the drawer was completely empty, save for a single, crisp manila envelope resting directly in the center of the bare wood.
Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird as his trembling fingers reached out and picked up the envelope.
It was unsealed, bearing no return address or postage stamp, just his name written in bold, unfamiliar handwriting.
Hesitating for a fraction of a second, he slid the flap open and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.
Written across the page in stark, black ink was a detailed property deed transferring ownership of the entire house directly to Elena.

At the bottom, beneath a signature that looked uncannily like his own, was a postscript that made the blood run cold in his veins: ‘She knows where the car keys are.’
