Chapter 7 - Surrounded by the Snow

Mark froze, his hand dropping instinctively toward a heavy iron poker resting beside the stone fireplace. Clara grabbed the edge of the wooden table, her breath catching in her throat as the tapping on the front window grew louder, more insistent. In the dim, flickering light of the kerosene lamp, Arthur remained entirely unruffled, calmly pouring himself a cup of black coffee from a tarnished silver pot.
"Relax, Mark," Arthur murmured, taking a slow sip. "If they wanted to burn this cabin down with us inside, they would have used a Molotov cocktail instead of knocking like polite salesmen. They want something from us, and they know we have it."
The heavy oak door rattled as someone tried the handle, finding the deadbolt firmly thrown from the inside. A muffled voice shouted through the thick wood, distorted by the howling wind outside.
"Arthur! Open the door! We know you're harboring them!"
It was David Vance’s voice, sharp and commanding, cutting through the winter storm like a razor.
Mark looked frantically toward the back of the cabin, his eyes scanning the shadowed corners for an alternate exit. "Is there a back way out of here, Arthur? A cellar, a trail into the ridge?"
"There is an old logging path that leads down to the frozen creek," Arthur replied calmly, setting his coffee cup down on the wooden table. "It connects to the old service road about two miles north. But you won't make it a hundred yards through this drift with a sleeping toddler, Mark. Not on foot."
"We can't stay here and wait for them to kick the door in," Clara said, her voice laced with rising panic as she stepped back toward the dark hallway. "They'll tear this place apart, and if they find the flash drive..."
"They won't find anything on this table," Arthur interrupted, standing up with surprising agility for a man his age. He walked over to the stone fireplace, reached out, and pressed a carved wooden brick on the mantelpiece. With a soft click, a narrow panel in the wainscoting slid open, revealing a dark, damp concrete staircase descending into the earth. "That leads down to the old storm shelter. It was built during the Cold War. There's an underground utility tunnel that empties out near the highway culvert."
Mark didn't hesitate. He grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her toward the hidden opening just as a loud crash echoed from the front porch. The sound of splintering wood signaled that David’s men had taken a sledgehammer to the deadbolt.
"Go, now!" Arthur commanded, stepping in front of the open panel and picking up his heavy leather ledger. "I'll stall them. Tell Evelyn that the foundation still stands."

Clara scooped Lily up from the rocking chair where she had set her down, clutching the toddler tightly against her chest as she descended into the cold, black subterranean passage behind Mark, the secret panel clicking shut behind them just as the front door flew off its hinges.
