Chapter 11 - The Magistrate’s Estate

The wrought-iron gates of Judge Thomas Miller’s estate stood open, welcoming yet ominously quiet. Mark drove the truck slowly up the curving gravel drive, parking beneath the grand portico of a sprawling brick colonial manor. Unlike Richard’s ostentatious home, this estate exuded a quiet, dignified authority, though a single carriage light burned brightly beside the heavy oak front door.

"Wait here with Lily and Sarah," Evelyn instructed, reaching for the door handle. "Judge Miller and I have history. If anyone else knocks on his door at three in the morning, he’ll have them arrested for trespassing before they can finish a sentence."

Clara nodded, holding Lily close as Evelyn stepped out of the truck and walked up the stone steps, pressing the brass doorbell firmly. Within moments, the heavy door swung open, revealing an elderly man with sharp gray hair, wearing a plaid bathrobe over his pajamas. He looked irritated until he recognized the figure standing in the dim porch light.

From inside the cab, Clara watched their animated conversation through the frosted windshield. Judge Miller’s expression shifted rapidly from annoyance to deep shock as Evelyn gestured back toward the truck and spoke with intense urgency. Finally, the judge nodded gravely, stepped back, and motioned for Evelyn to enter, before looking directly out toward the vehicle and gesturing for the rest of them to join.

"Come on," Mark whispered, unbuckling his seatbelt. He turned to Sarah and Clara. "Bring the bag. This is it."

They hurried up the steps, Sarah clutching the canvas bag to her chest while Clara carried the sleepy toddler. As they crossed the threshold into the grand foyer, the warmth of the home washed over them. Judge Miller stood by the study door, his face lined with fatigue and profound gravity.

"Evelyn tells me you have the physical ledgers, Mr. Halm," Judge Miller said, his voice deep and authoritative as he gestured them into his book-lined study. "If what she claims is true, you are sitting on a corporate conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the state legislature."

Sarah stepped forward, setting the canvas bag on the mahogany desk and unzipping it with trembling fingers. She laid out the yellowed bank statements, the digital printouts, and the forged trustee signatures under the harsh glow of the desk lamp. Judge Miller adjusted his half-moon spectacles, leaning over the desk as he began scanning the documents page by page. The room fell into absolute silence, broken only by the crack of a burning log in the brick fireplace.

After several agonizing minutes, Judge Miller looked up, his eyes resting squarely on Mark. "These signatures... they belong to my late colleague, Judge Arthur Vance’s brother. Richard didn't just forge them; he backdated them to bypass the SEC audit of 2018." He reached for his desk phone, his hand steady. "I am issuing an emergency federal warrant for Richard Halm's arrest and an immediate freeze on all Halm Development assets. But we have to move before—"

Suddenly, the heavy front windows of the study shattered inward in a shower of glass and splintered wood, accompanied by the deafening roar of a stun grenade thrown through the frame.
