Chapter 4 - A Desperate Escape

The heavy crunch of running boots on gravel shattered the tense silence outside the car. Clara whipped her head around as the driver's side window was violently tapped. A man in a dark hoodie leaned down, his face partially shadowed by a baseball cap, trying to yank the locked door open. It wasn't David Vance, nor was it one of Richard's corporate thugs—it was Mark, looking gaunt, pale, and terrified, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

Clara gasped, her heart leaping into her throat, and immediately unlocked the doors. Mark yanked the door open and scrambled into the driver’s seat, slamming it shut behind him. He smelled of damp earth and cheap coffee, his eyes wild and bloodshot as he scanned the dashboard instruments.

"Mark! Oh god, you're alive," Clara cried, lunging across the console to grab his arm. "They said you went into hiding, they said—"

"No time, Clara, listen to me," Mark interrupted, his voice frantic as he shoved the key into the ignition and threw the car into reverse. "Richard isn't just trying to cover up financial fraud. He’s liquidating the entire company's assets to fund a hostile takeover overseas. If we don't get out of this county tonight, we'll end up indicted for crimes we didn't commit."

"Evelyn is out there talking to David Vance," Clara said urgently, pointing toward the front where Evelyn and the corporate lawyer were still engaged in a heated standoff. "We can't just leave her!"

"Evelyn knows how to handle David; she’s been fighting him since our father died," Mark said, pressing hard on the accelerator. The tires squealed on the frozen asphalt as the car lurched backward, spinning in a tight arc away from the blocking SUV.

Through the rear window, Clara saw David Vance whirl around as their car's tires screeched. He abandoned his conversation with Evelyn and sprinted back toward his own vehicle, shouting commands into a two-way radio clipped to his lapel. Evelyn stood motionless in the middle of the empty lot, watching them go, her expression a mix of warning and fierce determination as she raised two fingers in a silent farewell.

Mark maneuvered the sedan onto the main highway, pushing the speedometer past eighty miles per hour as snow began to fall in thick, swirling sheets. The windshield wipers battered back and forth against the accumulating ice, struggling to clear the glass. Lily finally woke up in the backseat, letting out a soft, confused cry that cut through the tension in the cabin. Clara twisted around, unbuckling her seatbelt to reach back and comfort the toddler, murmuring soothing words while her own hands trembled uncontrollably.

"Where are we going, Mark?" Clara asked, her voice tight with exhaustion as she looked back up at the road ahead. "We can't go home, and my parents locked us out."

"We're going to the old cabin by Blackwood Lake," Mark said, his eyes glued to the dark, snow-slicked highway. "It's off the grid. Nobody knows it exists except for one person—the former chief financial officer of Halm Development, who was forced into early retirement ten years ago."

As the car sped past a rusted road sign indicating they were entering the dense forest district, Mark's phone began to vibrate violently in the center console, lighting up with a restricted caller ID.
