Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Shipyard

The old shipyard warehouse loomed like a concrete skeleton against the ink-black sky, its corrugated iron roof groaning under the bitter winter wind. Clara kept the car engine running, the dashboard heater humming softly as Lily drifted into an exhausted sleep in the backseat, her tiny chest rising and falling beneath the green velvet dress. Clara adjusted the rearview mirror, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. The soft bokeh lights of the distant city suburbs flickered through the chain-link fence, offering a stark contrast to the desolate industrial wasteland surrounding them.
A sleek black town car materialized from the fog, its headlights cutting twin beams through the gloom before clicking off. The passenger door swung open, and a woman in her late forties stepped out, her posture rigid, wrapped in a heavy charcoal wool coat. It was Evelyn Halm, Richard’s estranged half-sister, a woman whose very existence had been scrubbed from the family’s public history. Evelyn walked purposefully toward Clara’s car, her boots crunching over frozen gravel. She didn't knock; she simply pulled the passenger door open and slipped into the warmth of the cabin, bringing with her the scent of expensive perfume and damp earth.
"You're taking a massive risk bringing the child out here, Clara," Evelyn said, her voice low and measured, devoid of seasonal warmth but laced with sharp intelligence. "Richard has eyes everywhere. If he knows you're talking to me, your husband’s unemployment will be the absolute least of your worries."
"Mark didn't lose his job because of incompetence, Evelyn," Clara said, her voice tight with suppressed panic as she turned to face her sister-in-law. "That’s the lie Richard fed the entire family. Mark uncovered a massive discrepancy in the zoning permits for the downtown development project. Two days later, his accounts were locked, his access revoked, and he was fired for 'data theft' he never committed."
Evelyn stared at her, her expression unreadable in the dim dashboard glow. She slowly reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a silver cigarette case, though she didn't open it. "You think Mark is the first person Richard ruined to protect the family name and his position as CEO? My father built Halm Development on honesty, but Richard turned it into a laundering machine for offshore accounts."
"He told me to get out tonight," Clara whispered, a fresh tear escaping her eye. "He threw us away like garbage. I found this business card in Mark’s old briefcase. He told me before he went into hiding that if anything happened to him, you were the only one who knew where the real ledgers were hidden."
Evelyn went completely still, her dark eyes narrowing as she looked past Clara toward the sleeping toddler in the back. "Hideous place to keep a ledger, isn't it? But Mark wasn't stupid. He gave you the card because he knew Richard’s next move isn't just firing him. It's silencing him permanently."

Before Clara could process the chilling implication, a pair of high beams suddenly blinded them, flooding the car’s interior with harsh white light.
