Chapter 3 - The Ambush in the Mist

The blinding glare of the high beams bounced off the wet windshield, turning the frosted glass into a wall of white. Clara threw her arm across the dashboard, instinctively shielding her eyes while her other hand reached back to ensure Lily was still asleep in her car seat. The toddler stirred, letting out a soft, whimpering sigh, but remained unconscious. Beside her, Evelyn didn't panic; instead, her hand slid swiftly into her coat pocket, her fingers closing around a heavy metallic object.
"Stay down, Clara," Evelyn commanded in a harsh whisper, her eyes fixed on the approaching vehicle through the glare.
A heavy-duty black SUV crept out of the swirling fog, its engine rumbling with a low, predatory purth. It parked diagonally, effectively blocking the narrow exit route from the warehouse bay. The driver's side door clicked open, and a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out, his face obscured by the blinding headlights. He walked with a familiar, confident stride that made Clara’s breath catch in her throat. It wasn't hired muscle; it was David Vance, Richard’s chief legal counsel and corporate fixer.
"He found us," Clara breathed, her fingers tightening on the steering wheel until her knuckles ached. "How did he possibly track us here so fast?"
"Because your car has a corporate lease, Clara. Richard never took Mark off the family fleet insurance," Evelyn said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she popped the glove box open and retrieved a small, encrypted flash drive. "Take this. It's a duplicate of every financial wire transfer Halm Development made to shell companies in the Caymans over the last five years. If I don't walk out of this car in five minutes, you drive straight to the federal prosecutor's office downtown."
"I'm not leaving you here with him, Evelyn!" Clara protested, her voice rising in panic.
"You aren't leaving anyone. You're surviving," Evelyn snapped, shoving the flash drive into Clara's coat pocket. "David Vance is only here to retrieve the physical ledger Mark copied. He doesn't know you have the digital duplicates yet. Play dumb, protect the child, and drive like hell the second I step out."
Before Clara could argue further, Evelyn pushed the passenger door open and stepped out into the freezing night air, slamming the door shut behind her. Clara watched through the side mirror as Evelyn stood tall against the wind, facing David Vance as he approached. They exchanged sharp words that were swallowed by the howling gale, their breath pluming in the icy air. David pointed an accusing finger toward Clara’s car, his posture threatening, but Evelyn stood her ground, crossing her arms defiantly.

Suddenly, a second set of headlights flashed from the opposite end of the abandoned lot, cutting through the fog and illuminating a figure sprinting toward the driver’s side door.
