Chapter 9

The formal notification arrived via secure military dispatch late that afternoon. A federal judge in the district court had granted an emergency injunction freezing all of Robert Vance’s assets pending a federal fraud and obstruction investigation. Accompanying the injunction was a formal subpoena requiring Robert Vance, Julian Vance, and Captain Sarah Miller to appear before a federal magistrate within forty-eight hours for an emergency deposition regarding the Oakhaven estate trust registry.

Colonel Vance handed the official documents to Sarah in his office, his expression cautiously optimistic. "The federal magistrate takes financial fraud and tampering with judicial records very seriously. Once this subpoena is formally served, Robert won't be able to hide behind his local magistrate friends anymore."

"Will he show up?" David asked, standing near the door with his arms crossed.

"He won't have a choice," Colonel Vance replied firmly. "Federal marshals are executing the service order at Oakhaven Manor right now. The era of Robert Vance operating above the law in this county is officially over."

Yet, despite the victory, an uneasy feeling lingered in the back of Sarah’s mind. Men like Robert Vance did not simply surrender when cornered; they prepared for scorched-earth tactics. Throughout the afternoon, repeated attempts to contact the estate caretaker went unanswered, and local police dispatch logs showed an unusual spike in encrypted radio traffic originating from the vicinity of Oakhaven Manor.

As evening approached, Sarah and David returned to their quarters to pack a few overnight bags for Lily. They planned to transfer the little girl to a secure military family safe house off-base for the duration of the upcoming federal proceedings. Lily sat quietly on her bed, coloring in a new drawing book David had bought her, seemingly shielded from the adult storm raging around her by the quiet strength of her parents.

"Mommy, are we going back to the big house with the old man in the black suit?" Lily asked softly, looking up from her crayons with big, innocent eyes.

Sarah knelt down beside her daughter, taking the small hands in her own with a reassuring smile. "No, sweetie. We're never going back there. We’re going to a safe place where nobody can ever tell you that you don't belong."

David stood in the doorway, watching the exchange with a quiet warmth that contrasted sharply with the dangerous tension of the mission ahead. But the moment of peace was shattered by the sharp ring of Sarah’s military-issued cell phone resting on the kitchen counter.

Sarah stood up quickly and answered the secure line. "Captain Miller."

"Sarah, this is Colonel Vance," the voice on the other end was clipped, urgent, and laced with immediate alarm. "The federal marshals just breached Oakhaven Manor to serve the subpoena. The house is completely abandoned. But they found something in the private study that you need to see right now."
