Chapter 5

The crisp night air hit them like a physical blow as Sarah and David hurried down the grand stone steps of Oakhaven Manor, shielding a still-sleeping Lily between them. Their military-issue sedan sat idling at the edge of the circular gravel driveway, its headlights cutting twin beams through the swirling autumn mist. Sarah’s fingers gripped the handle of the passenger door tightly, her mind racing through the logistical nightmare they had just stepped into. Robert Vance had not merely threatened them; he had laid out a clear, legally fortified trap designed to strip them of their careers, their custody rights, and their dignity.
David gently placed Lily into her car seat in the back, buckling her in with practiced efficiency while checking the perimeter through the rearview mirror. The sprawling estate loomed behind them like a dark monolith, its gothic windows reflecting the pale moonlight. "He's going to file those charges by morning," David said as he slid into the driver’s seat, slamming his door shut and locking all four automatic doors with a sharp click.
"Let him," Sarah replied, pulling the archive files from her jacket and placing them securely in the center console. "CID is already reviewing the initial packet I transmitted from my phone before we lost signal inside the basement. Once they cross-reference the coroner's altered timestamp with the federal property transfer registry, Robert won't be able to hide behind his local judges anymore."
As the sedan crunched down the long gravel drive, the headlights swept past the wrought-iron gates of the estate, where a dark unmarked vehicle sat parked on the shoulder of the county road. Sarah caught a brief glimpse of the driver through the tinted window—a man in a dark suit holding a handheld radio. Her stomach tightened into a knot. Robert hadn't just relied on the legal system; he had maintained active surveillance on the perimeter of the property for years, keeping tabs on everyone who entered or left his domain.
"He's got people watching the road," David observed quietly, his hands resting firmly on the steering wheel as he navigated the sharp turns of the winding country lane.
"Keep driving," Sarah instructed, her tone unwavering. "Don't stop until we reach the military base checkpoint at Sector Four. Once we're inside federal jurisdiction, local warrants lose their immediate bite."

The drive was agonizingly slow through the thick fog that rolled in from the nearby river valley. Every shadow cast by the towering oak trees seemed to take on a menacing shape, reminding them that Oakhaven’s influence extended far beyond its iron gates. Inside the back seat, Lily stirred, letting out a small, contented sigh as she clutched a small stuffed rabbit David had managed to rescue from her bedroom before they left. The innocence of the child contrasted sharply with the dangerous web of deception her parents were now desperately trying to unravel.
By the time the concrete barriers and armed guards of Sector Four came into view, the dashboard clock read midnight. The military police officer on duty stepped out of the warmth of the guard shack, shining a bright flashlight beam across the windshield before recognizing Major Miller’s uniform. The heavy steel boom barrier lifted smoothly, welcoming them into a zone of safety, but both Sarah and David knew this was only the opening skirmish in a war for their family’s future.
