Chapter 7

The sun had barely cleared the horizon when the knock came at the door of the base quarters assigned to the Miller family. Sarah was sitting at the small kitchen table, staring intently at a digital tablet displaying scanned copies of the archive documents, while David was quietly preparing breakfast for Lily in the adjacent kitchenette. The sharp, double rap against the metal-reinforced door made them both freeze.
David set the spatula down immediately, exchanging a guarded look with Sarah before walking over to the entryway. He checked the peephole, his posture instantly stiffening. Without a word, he unlocked the heavy door and pulled it open.
Standing on the threshold was not a military investigator or an MPs detail, but a sharp-dressed civilian in a charcoal grey suit—a man younger than Robert Vance, with cold, calculating eyes and a silver briefcase gripped tightly in his right hand.
"Major Miller," the man said smoothly, his voice carrying an unmistakable coastal polish. "My name is Julian Vance. Robert Vance sent me. We need to talk before things escalate beyond repair."
Sarah stepped into the hallway, her eyes narrowing as she took in the unexpected visitor. "Robert doesn't send messengers unless he's cornered. How did you even get past base security with a civilian pass?"
Julian offered a thin, polite smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Let’s just say Oakhaven’s influence extends slightly further than the county line, Captain. May I come in?"
"You have ten seconds to state your business before I have the military police escort you off federal property," David said, his hand resting on the doorframe, blocking any attempt at entry.
Julian’s smile faded, replaced by a businesslike coldness. He lifted the silver briefcase slightly. "Robert is willing to drop all pending civil suits, clear your personnel files of any retaliatory administrative marks, and officially transfer full title ownership of the southern acreage of Oakhaven to your name, Captain Miller. All in exchange for one simple thing: the documents and the letter you removed from the manor last night."
Sarah let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "You think you can buy us off with a slice of land? After everything he’s done?"
"It’s not a bribe, Captain; it’s a settlement," Julian corrected smoothly. "You want your life back, your military career unblemished, and your daughter raised without the constant shadow of litigation hanging over her head. Robert wants his privacy restored. It’s a clean trade."
From the kitchenette doorway, Lily poked her head out, clutching her stuffed rabbit, her large blue eyes wide with curiosity as she looked at the stranger in the hallway. Julian’s gaze flicked toward the little girl for a fraction of a second, a subtle shift in his expression that didn't go unnoticed by Sarah or David.

"Get out," Sarah whispered, her voice vibrating with a lethal intensity that left zero room for negotiation. "Tell Robert that the only thing he’ll be receiving from us is a federal indictment."
Julian sighed, adjusting his cuffs with practiced indifference. "A pity. Robert warned me you were just as stubborn as your mother." With that, he turned on his heel and walked down the concrete corridor toward the base exit, leaving an eerie silence in his wake.
