Chapter 10

The federal marshals’ black SUVs were parked haphazardly across the manicured lawn of Oakhaven Manor when Sarah and David arrived under military escort. The heavy oak front door stood wide open, its brass handle scuffed and dented from the forced entry. Inside, the grand hallway felt colder and more desolate than before, the scent of burning wood entirely replaced by the sterile smell of chemical dust and ozone.
Agent Miller—a senior federal investigator unrelated to the military family—met them near the foot of the grand staircase, holding a tactical flashlight and a clear evidence bag containing a thumb drive.
"We swept the entire estate," Agent Miller reported, his breath pluming slightly in the unheated foyer. "The staff quarters are empty, the security servers have been wiped clean, and all the financial ledgers from the basement archive are gone. Robert and Julian vanished hours before our team arrived."
"How is that possible?" Sarah demanded, stepping past him toward the study. "You had the perimeter secured under federal seal!"
"There's an old service tunnel network built during the prohibition era," Agent Miller explained, following her into the sprawling study. "It connects the basement directly to the river road half a mile away. They cleared out before the marshals even crossed the county line."
Inside the study, the devastation was absolute. The massive mahogany desk had been stripped bare, and the portrait of Robert’s ancestors above the mantelpiece had been slashed down the middle. Yet, resting in the center of the unlit hearth—untouched by the fire this time—was a single, heavy manila envelope bearing Sarah’s full military rank and name written in Robert’s unmistakable block handwriting.
David walked over cautiously, using a pen to slide the envelope away from the ash. He looked up at Sarah. "Open it."
Sarah stepped forward, her hands steady as she slit open the heavy paper. Inside was a single, printed deed transfer document bearing a notarized stamp dated two days prior—and an actual, authentic handwritten note from her late mother, penned shortly before the fatal accident.

“If you are reading this, Sarah,” her mother’s familiar handwriting read, “Robert has finally succeeded in isolating the estate. But Oakhaven was never just about money. The true foundation of this house rests on the truth of what happened to our family. Don't let them bury the past in the ashes.”
Agent Miller shined his flashlight across the bottom of the document, where a series of numeric coordinates were handwritten in the margin. "These aren't property lines. These are GPS coordinates. They lead to an old bank safety deposit box in downtown Boston."
