Chapter 9: The Gathering Storm

Over the weekend leading up to the custody hearing, Clara spent hours preparing with Arthur Vance and his legal team. They conducted mock cross-examinations in the firm’s conference room, anticipating every dirty trick Eleanor’s lawyers were likely to pull. Arthur drilled Clara relentlessly on her emotional responses, ensuring she remained calm, composed, and unfailingly polite even when confronted with aggressive, invasive questioning.
"They’re going to attack your character, your history, and your mental state," Arthur warned her during a break, handing her a bottle of water. "They’ll bring up the fact that you left the house without your son initially, trying to frame it as abandonment rather than forced eviction."
"I left because Officer Miller escorted me out under threat of physical removal," Clara stated firmly, unscrewing the cap. "I have the police report, and Officer Miller has agreed to provide an independent statement confirming the circumstances of my departure."
Arthur smiled approvingly. "Good. That completely neutralizes their abandonment narrative. Just remember to breathe, Clara. Let the facts speak for themselves."
Meanwhile, across town, Eleanor Sterling was holding her own kind of preparation meeting. She sat in her private study with three carefully selected family friends who had agreed to sign false character affidavits. They were wealthy socialites and board members of the Sterling Foundation who owed their positions entirely to Eleanor’s patronage.
"All you have to do is state under oath that Clara displayed erratic, unstable behavior during social gatherings over the past year," Eleanor instructed them smoothly, pouring crystal glasses of scotch. "Mention her sudden mood swings, her reclusive habits, and her apparent lack of maternal bonding with Toby. The judge will take one look at her background and rule in our favor."
One of the socialites, a nervous woman named Evelyn, hesitated, holding her glass mid-air. "Eleanor, are we sure this won't backfire? I heard Arthur Vance is representing her. He’s notoriously aggressive during cross-examinations."

Eleanor’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened stare. "Arthur Vance is a ambulance-chaser playing in the big leagues. He has no proof of anything except a disgruntled ex-wife stealing confidential files. If you stick to the script, there is nothing to fear. Loyalty to this family has always been rewarded, Evelyn. Disloyalty is... remembered."
Evelyn swallowed hard and nodded, intimidated into compliance. Eleanor leaned back in her leather chair, feeling supremely confident. She truly believed that wealth, power, and social influence could bend any truth to her will. She had no idea that the foundation she built was already crumbling beneath her feet, grain by grain.
