Chapter 6: Whispers in the Nursery

Inside the sprawling Sterling estate, the atmosphere was thick with manufactured peace. The party banners had been hastily taken down, and the leftover cake boxed away, leaving the living room feeling cavernous and sterile. Eleanor sat at the mahogany dining table, sipping lukewarm black coffee while reviewing a daily report from her private security consultant. Across from her sat Marcus, nervously rocking Toby, who was fussing softly in his white patterned onesie.
"She went to a shelter on the east side," Eleanor stated coldly, not looking up from her tablet. "My sources inside the community services office confirmed it within an hour."
Marcus swallowed hard, avoiding his mother’s sharp gaze. "Do you think she’ll try to contact a lawyer, Mother? What if she... what if she somehow gets access to the home office safe?"
"The safe is secure, Marcus," Eleanor snapped, slamming her coffee cup down onto the saucer with a sharp clatter. "And even if she managed to pull some files before she left, who would believe a hysterical, unhinged woman with no money and no social standing? The courts belong to people who build cities, not parasites who leech off them."
Toby let out a sudden, sharp cry, picking up on the rising tension in the room. Marcus awkwardly patted the baby’s back, whispering shushing sounds that lacked any real comfort. He felt a sickening knot twist in his stomach. Despite his mother’s fierce confidence, Marcus knew Clara better than Eleanor cared to admit. Clara wasn't hysterical; she was methodical, quiet, and fiercely intelligent. When Clara set her mind to something, she didn't throw tantrums—she executed plans with terrifying precision.
"Maybe we should offer her a modest settlement," Marcus murmured hesitantly. "A clean break with some financial support. Just to make her go away quietly."
Eleanor rose slowly from her chair, her blonde updo catching the morning light as she walked over to Marcus. She placed a cold, heavy hand on his shoulder, pressing down slightly until Marcus flinched.
"A settlement is a sign of weakness, Marcus. It admits guilt," Eleanor whispered in a venomous tone. "We give her nothing. We let the courts declare her an unfit mother, we seal the custody records, and she disappears into obscurity forever. Do you understand me?"
Marcus nodded numbly, too terrified of his mother’s wrath to argue further. He looked down at Toby’s innocent face, wondering if he had traded his soul and his family for the hollow comfort of inherited wealth.
Later that afternoon, while Eleanor was occupied with a conference call in her study, Marcus slipped upstairs to the master bedroom. His heart hammered against his ribs as he approached the walk-in closet where the wall safe was concealed behind a row of tailored suits. He punched in the numeric code, swung the heavy steel door open, and checked the secondary internal compartment where the backup flash drive was normally stored.

His breath caught in his throat. The drive was gone.
Panic surged through his veins. Clara hadn't just left peacefully; she had taken the core financial ledger containing every shell company, every fraudulent transaction, and every illicit wire transfer connecting the Sterling Foundation to Eleanor’s private accounts. Marcus leaned against the doorframe, trembling violently. If Eleanor found out the drive was missing before they managed to neutralize Clara legally, both of their lives would be utterly destroyed.
