Chapter 7: The Counter-Strike

Back at the downtown law offices, Arthur Vance’s team was working around the clock. The conference room looked like a war room, covered in whiteboards, printed financial transcripts, and color-coded organizational charts mapping out the Sterling Foundation's complex network of corruption. Clara sat at the head of the table, going over bank routing numbers with Sarah, the senior legal assistant, when Arthur strode into the room carrying a fresh stack of court filings.

"We just filed the emergency custody petition and the asset freezing injunctions in superior court," Arthur announced, dropping the heavy folders onto the table with a satisfying thud. "Judge Henderson signed off on the temporary asset freeze twenty minutes ago before Eleanor's defense team even knew what hit them."

A collective murmur of approval rippled through the legal team. Clara felt a brief moment of immense relief, knowing that Eleanor’s financial lifeline had just been severely constricted.

"She won't take this lying down," Clara warned, leaning back in her chair. "Eleanor has contingencies for everything. If her accounts are frozen, she’ll try to liquidate physical assets or intimidate witnesses."

"Let her try," Arthur said with a confident smirk. "We’ve already notified federal regulatory agencies regarding the offshore shell companies found on your flash drive. The IRS and the SEC are opening preliminary reviews. By the time Eleanor realizes her empire is leaking, the dam will have already burst."

Sarah slid a printed document across the table toward Clara. "We also received notice of a preliminary custody hearing scheduled for next Tuesday morning. Eleanor’s lawyers are petitioning for permanent sole custody, citing unspecified mental instability on your part."

Clara looked at the hearing date, her jaw tightening. "They’re going to lie. They’ll bring in paid witnesses, manipulated medical evaluations, and character assassinations to prove I’m unfit."

"Let them bring their witnesses," Arthur said firmly, placing a reassuring hand on the edge of the table. "We have undeniable digital evidence of coercion, financial abuse, and systemic fraud. More importantly, we have truth on our side. But we need to ensure you present yourself with absolute poise in that courtroom. Eleanor will try to provoke you into an emotional outburst on the stand."

"I won't give her the satisfaction," Clara replied coldly, her eyes hard and focused. "I survived three years in that house walking on eggshells. A courtroom is nothing compared to the cage I just escaped from."

That evening, as Clara walked back to the shelter under the cool evening sky, she felt a profound shift within herself. The frightened, bruised woman who had stood washing dishes in a pale pink dress while Eleanor screamed commands was gone. In her place stood a mother fighting for her child, armed with facts, legal representation, and an unbreakable will. She knew the upcoming court battle would be brutal, but she was finally ready to face the storm head-on.
