Chapter 8: Fractured Loyalties

The rain lashed against the tall arched windows of the Sterling estate, casting long, gloomy shadows across the grand foyer. Inside the mahogany-paneled library, Eleanor paced back and forth in front of the unlit fireplace, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. Her defense attorney, a sleek, expensive man named Henderson who specialized in silencing corporate scandals, sat calmly in an armchair, scrolling through his tablet.

"What do you mean her accounts are frozen?" Eleanor hissed, stopping dead in her tracks to glare at her lawyer. "By whose authority?"

"Judge Henderson signed an emergency asset freeze tied to a federal preliminary inquiry," the attorney replied evenly, not looking up from his screen. "It appears Mrs. Sterling has retained Arthur Vance. And worse, she has provided them with documentation concerning the foundation's offshore subsidiaries."

Marcus stood near the corner of the room, holding a sleeping Toby in his arms. The silence that followed was deafening. Eleanor turned her furious gaze toward her son, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"You told me the safe was secure, Marcus," Eleanor whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. "You assured me that little parasite didn't take anything of value when she ran off."

"I... I thought she didn't know the code," Marcus stammered, his face pale with terror. "She must have watched me open it when we transferred funds last month. Mother, what are we going to do? If Vance exposes the foundation, we’ll lose everything—the house, the stocks, the social standing..."

"Shut up, Marcus!" Eleanor snapped, regaining her composure with chilling efficiency. "We do what we always do. We control the narrative. If Clara wants a war, we will give her a war. We will paint her as a delusional, paranoid extortionist who stole company documents in a bitter fit of spite."

Attorney Henderson adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, clearing his throat. "That defense might be difficult if Vance presents the digital audit trail in court next Tuesday. The judge presiding over the custody hearing is known for being strictly impartial and intolerant of corporate malfeasance. We need a stronger angle."

Eleanor walked slowly toward her son, reaching out to stroke Toby’s soft cheek. The baby stirred in his sleep, breathing softly. "People see what they expect to see, Mr. Henderson. A wealthy, respected family protecting an innocent child from an unstable, desperate mother. We will present character affidavits from our family friends, our clergy, and our medical staff. Clara will look like a footnote in a tragedy of her own making."

Marcus looked down at his son, a profound wave of guilt washing over him. He knew every single affidavit would be a fabricated lie, orchestrated by his mother to destroy the woman who had loved him unconditionally before he let fear turn him into a coward. For the first time in his life, Marcus felt a tiny flicker of rebellion spark against his mother's iron grip.
