Chapter 5: Inside the Fortress

The heavy mahogany doors of Arthur Vance’s private office closed with a muffled thud, shutting out the bustle of the legal firm. Arthur dropped the manila folder onto his expansive glass desk, lowered himself into an ergonomic leather chair, and steepled his fingers. He looked at Clara across the desk, his expression a mix of professional curiosity and guarded skepticism.
"You realize what you've just handed me, Mrs. Sterling?" Arthur asked quietly. "This isn't just a messy divorce filing. This is a roadmap to a federal indictment for fraud, extortion, and conspiracy."
"I know exactly what it is," Clara replied, taking a seat opposite him without waiting for an invitation. "Eleanor thinks she is untouchable. She has judges, local politicians, and police captains in her pocket. But she made one critical mistake—she underestimated the person she invited into her home."
Arthur leaned forward, resting his forearms on the glass. "How did you get these files?"
"Marcus was careless. He kept an unencrypted mirror drive in his home office safe, thinking no one would ever dare touch it. I made a copy before she locked me out," Clara explained truthfully, omitting the physical violence for the moment, keeping the focus strictly on the legal leverage. "She wants to paint me as an unstable, hysterical mother to sever my parental rights permanently. I need a custody order, and I need an emergency protective audit of the household assets before she has time to scrub the servers."
Arthur nodded slowly, tapping a pen against his chin. "Eleanor Sterling is a formidable adversary. She wields philanthropy like a shield and legal threats like a sword. If we move too fast, she will bury us in injunctions and use her influence to lock you out of the courts entirely. We need to strike where she is most arrogant—her public image."
"Public image is everything to her," Clara agreed. "The Sterling Foundation gala is coming up in three weeks. It’s her annual showcase where local elites fawn over her generosity while she quietly forecloses on working-class mortgages through dummy corporations."
A sharp gleam appeared in Arthur’s grey eyes. "A gala. How poetic. Tell me, Clara, are you prepared for a very public war? Because once we file these injunctions, there’s no turning back. Your husband and your mother-in-law will come at you with everything they have."
"They already took my son," Clara said, her voice steady and resolute. "I have nothing left to lose, and everything to reclaim."

Arthur reached out his hand across the desk. "Then welcome to the legal team, Clara. Let’s dismantle an empire."
For the first time in over a year, Clara felt a genuine spark of hope ignite within her chest. She shook Arthur’s hand firmly, sealing an alliance that would soon shake the foundations of the city’s elite class. But as she left the office and stepped back onto the bustling street, a cold realization reminded her that Eleanor never left loose ends untied.
