Chapter 9 - A Dangerous Alliance

The cold barrel of Victor’s handgun gleamed menacingly under the porch light, casting an inescapable shadow over the driveway. David’s heart pounded in his ears like a war drum. He stood paralyzed between Marcus, who had suddenly transformed from a cynical parasite into a desperate protector, and Victor, a professional enforcer with blood on his hands.

"I said drop it, Marcus!" Victor repeated, taking a slow, calculated step down the wooden steps.

Marcus let the heavy metal tire iron slip from his fingers, letting it clang loudly against the concrete pavement. He raised both hands slowly, his eyes darting frantically toward the open door of the black SUV.

"We don't have to do this, Vic," Marcus said, his voice straining to remain calm. "The girl doesn't know anything. Neither does David. Just take the briefcase from the house and let us walk away."

Victor sneered, shaking his head. "You know how this works, kid. Loose ends get tied up. Elena tried to play cute, thinking she could keep the books and leverage the estate. But the bosses aren't patient anymore."

David seized the brief moment of distraction. While Victor’s attention was fixed entirely on Marcus, David dropped low, sweeping his leg out in a desperate, low tackle that caught Victor off balance. The enforcer stumbled sideways, his finger convulsing on the trigger as he fell.

Bang!

The gunshot shattered the rear window of the black SUV, showering the interior in safety glass.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, using his shoulder to drive into Victor’s chest, pinning the heavier man against the side of the porch railing. With a sharp crack, Marcus brought his elbow down hard on Victor’s wrist, forcing the handgun to drop from his grip. It skittered across the concrete, sliding into the darkness beneath a sprawling hydrangea bush.

"Get in the car, David!" Marcus screamed, shoving Victor backward and sprinting toward the driver's side door.

David scrambled up from the pavement, his shoulder throbbing from the earlier blow, and dove into the passenger seat of the SUV just as Victor began to pull himself back up, roaring with fury.

Marcus slammed the transmission into drive, stepping hard on the gas pedal. The SUV’s tires tore up the lawn as Marcus whipped the steering wheel around, speeding out of the driveway and onto the main road before Victor could retrieve his weapon.

Inside the speeding vehicle, the dashboard lights cast a harsh green glow across Marcus’s sweat-streaked face.

"Are you insane?" David panted, clutching his ribs as he stared out the shattered rear window. "You could have gotten us both killed!"

Marcus gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned bone white, his eyes fixed on the empty highway ahead.

"I told you, David, you don't understand what my sister got mixed up in," Marcus replied grimly. "Elena didn't marry you for your money. She married you because Sarah—your first wife—stole something worth millions from the syndicate before she died. And Lily has it hidden in one of those blue storybooks."
