Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Binding

The revelation hung heavy in the stifling air of the speeding SUV, silencing the roaring engine for a terrifying moment. David turned his head slowly, staring at Marcus in disbelief. The streetlights outside flashed overhead, casting alternating shadows across Marcus’s strained expression.
"Sarah... stole from them?" David whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "That’s impossible. Sarah was an archivist, a quiet woman who spent her days preserving rare manuscripts. She didn't even know criminals."
Marcus let out a bitter, humorless laugh, keeping his eyes locked on the winding asphalt ahead.
"That's what she wanted everyone to believe," Marcus said, shaking his head. "Sarah was the top forensic appraiser for a private antiquities syndicate run by a man named Henderson. When she realized what they were laundering through those rare book auctions, she copied their digital ledger, encrypted it into micro-dots, and bound the pages into ordinary children’s storybooks—the very ones Lily carries everywhere."
David felt the ground beneath his feet—or rather, the seat beneath him—dissolve into nothingness. The memory of Sarah flashed through his mind: her gentle smile, her soft voice reading bedtime stories to a baby Lily. It all suddenly looked entirely different, wrapped in a shroud of espionage and lethal danger.
"And Elena?" David asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of betrayal and dread. "Where does she fit into all of this?"
Marcus sighed heavily, flicking the turn signal as he took a sharp exit off the highway toward an industrial park on the outskirts of the city.
"Elena is Henderson's primary operative," Marcus admitted, the confession tasting bitter on his tongue. "She was sent to infiltrate your life after Sarah passed away, searching every inch of this house for those books. But when she realized Lily was carrying them like security blankets, she couldn't just steal them without breaking the encryption. She needed time. But you walked in on her today, and everything blew up."
David gripped the door handle, a sudden spike of panic overriding his shock.
"If Elena works for Henderson, and she has Lily... where are they taking her?" David demanded, turning angrily toward his brother-in-law.
Marcus slowed the SUV down, turning off the headlights as they coasted into the shadowed parking lot of a disused brick warehouse near the riverfront. He put the car in park and turned to look David directly in the eyes.
"They're taking her to Henderson’s private dock," Marcus said softly. "The freighter leaves for international waters at midnight. We have less than twenty minutes to get inside, find Lily, and get out alive."

Before David could reply, the passenger side window exploded inward as a heavy iron pipe smashed through the glass, showering them both in shattered fragments.
