Chapter 14 - The Final Stand on the Deck

The damp night air hit David like a physical blow as he landed hard on the wooden docks below, scraping his palms against the splintered planks. Above him, the towering hull of the cargo freighter loomed against the dark waters of the river, its massive engines rumbling with a low, vibrating hum that signaled it was moments away from casting off its moorings.

Marcus and Elena dropped down from the warehouse window moments later, landing heavily on the pavement behind him.

"The loading ramp is retracting!" Marcus shouted, pointing toward the stern of the ship where a massive hydraulic bridge was slowly lifting into the air.

David broke into a dead sprint, ignoring the agonizing pain in his ribs and the throbbing wound on the back of his head. He reached the edge of the concrete pier just as the gap between the dock and the ship widened to six feet. Without pausing to calculate the impossible physics of the jump, David hurled himself forward across the dark, churning water.

His hands slammed hard against the wet steel railing of the freighter’s lower deck, his legs dangling briefly over the abyss before he hauled his weight upward, tumbling onto the grated metal floor.

Marcus and Elena made the jump right behind him, landing clumsily but rolling safely onto the deck.

Before David could catch his breath, heavy footsteps echoed down the metal staircase from the upper bridge. Henderson emerged from the shadows, flanked by two armed operatives, holding the stolen silver locket in one hand and a detonator remote in the other.

"Impressive persistence, Mr. Miller," Henderson sneered, raising a pistol in his free hand while keeping the detonator primed. "Unfortunately, you’ve arrived just in time to watch the evidence—and your daughter—sink to the bottom of the river."

"Where is she, Henderson?!" David roared, lunging forward, but the two operatives intercepted him instantly, throwing him hard against the steel bulkhead.

Elena stepped out from behind Marcus, her face a mask of cold, unyielding resolve. She reached into the pocket of her ruined silk shirt and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive—the actual digital backup of the syndicate's ledger that she had secretly downloaded while pretending to serve Henderson.

"Let the girl go, Henderson," Elena demanded, her voice ringing clear and steady above the roar of the ship's engines. "Or I broadcast the entire financial network to every federal agency in the country right now."

Henderson’s eyes widened in genuine panic for the first time, his finger hovering over the trigger of the detonator as he realized he had been betrayed by his own most trusted operative.
