Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Hallway

The heavy thud from the entryway startled both David and Elena, breaking the volatile standoff. David lowered his trembling hand, though his eyes never left his wife’s unblinking gaze. Lily continued to sob softly on the dark leather couch, her small hands still clutching the remaining blue-covered storybooks as if they were shields against an invisible enemy. The front door creaked open further, and a tall figure stepped into the foyer, kicking off muddy designer boots. It was Marcus, Elena’s younger brother, visiting unannounced as he often did, carrying a heavy duffel bag over one shoulder.

"Whoa, heavy atmosphere in here," Marcus called out, tossing his keys onto the ceramic bowl by the door. "Did I miss a family meeting, or is someone finally realizing how exhausting parenthood is?"

Elena didn't blink. She smoothly adjusted the cuffs of her silk beige button-down shirt, reclaiming her composure with terrifying speed.

"Nothing you need to concern yourself with, Marcus," Elena replied smoothly, her voice devoid of any lingering agitation. "David is simply overreacting to a minor domestic disagreement. Children throw tantrums. It is entirely natural."

David turned back sharply, his anger flaring anew at her casual dismissal of what had just occurred.

"A tantrum?" David stepped toward Elena again, his voice rising. "She was crying because you physically ripped her mother's book out of her hands! Do not gaslight me in my own home, Elena. I saw what you did."

Marcus leaned against the hallway archway, crossing his arms and watching the exchange with a cynical amusement that sickened David.

"Relax, man," Marcus said, rolling his eyes. "Elena is just trying to establish boundaries. Kids need discipline. If you let her cling to those old books, she’ll never move on from the past."

"Stay out of this, Marcus," David snapped, pointing a finger at his brother-in-law. "This is between my wife and me. Or rather, it was, until you walked in uninvited."

Elena placed a delicate hand on David’s arm, a gesture that looked loving to an outsider but felt like a cold python coil to David’s skin.

"Please, David, not in front of my brother," Elena whispered, her eyes pleading for public harmony while her expression remained completely dead inside. "Let's talk about this later. Upstairs. In private."

David shrugged her hand off violently, shaking his head. He looked down at Lily, who was watching them with wide, terrified eyes. Kneeling back down beside her, David offered a reassuring smile that felt hollow even to him.

"Go to your room, sweetheart," David told her softly. "Daddy needs to talk to Elena and Marcus right now."

Lily nodded slowly, sliding off the dark leather couch and clutching the blue-covered books tightly to her chest. She hurried down the hallway, her small sneakers squeaking against the floorboards until her bedroom door clicked shut. David stood up, facing the two siblings with a hardened expression.

"All right," David said coldly. "Let's talk about boundaries. And while we're at it, let's talk about what else you've been hiding in this house."

Elena's face finally lost its color, a microscopic twitch of her left eye betraying sudden panic.
