Chapter 12 - The Locket and the Ledger

Lily blinked against the harsh glare of the flashlights, her light brown hair slightly tangled as she spotted David standing among the armed men.
"Daddy!" Lily cried out, her voice trembling as she tried to pull away from the operative holding her hand.
"Lily!" David shouted, taking a desperate step forward, but the heavy barrel of an assault rifle pressed firmly against his chest, halting him instantly.
Henderson raised a gloved hand, signaling the guard to hold. He walked slowly toward the little girl, his silver-headed cane tapping against the concrete. Elena stood just behind him, her eyes fixed on the ground, refusing to meet David’s betrayed gaze. Henderson knelt down to Lily’s eye level, flashing a sickeningly gentle smile that failed to reach his dead eyes.
"There’s a good girl," Henderson murmured smoothly. "Now, sweetie, be a dear and give Uncle Henderson the pretty silver locket around your neck. The one your mommy gave you."
Lily instinctively clutched the small silver pendant against her chest, shaking her head vigorously as tears welled up in her light brown eyes.
"No," Lily whimpered softly, echoing the exact defiance she had shown Elena hours earlier in the living room. "Mommy said never to take it off. It’s magic."
David’s heart shattered at the sound of his daughter’s voice. He glared daggers at Elena, who finally looked up, her lower lip trembling slightly under the weight of her guilt.
"Elena, look at what you're doing!" David screamed, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls of the warehouse. "Is this really what you traded your soul for? Helping these monsters terrorize a child?"
Elena flinched as if struck across the face. She took a half-step toward Lily, her hands twitching nervously at her sides.
"Henderson, stop," Elena whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "This wasn't part of the deal. We were just supposed to retrieve the books, not traumatize a little girl."
Henderson didn't even turn around to look at her. His smile vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of cold authority.
"Silence, Elena," Henderson hissed quietly. "You completed your assignment the moment you brought her here. Now, step aside before you become a liability as well."
Henderson reached out, his long fingers closing roughly around the silver locket on Lily’s neck before she could dodge away. With a sharp wrench, the thin silver chain snapped, and Henderson stood up triumphantly, holding the pendant in the palm of his hand.

Marcus let out a loud curse, struggling furiously against the guards holding him, while David lunged forward with a primal roar, managing to break past the first guard before a heavy rifle butt crashed down against the back of his skull, plunging him into sudden, suffocating darkness.
