Chapter 9 - The Empty Bed

The words hung in the air like a physical blow. Elena stopped dead in her tracks, pulling her arm away from Marcus as if she had been burned.

"What did you say?" Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the police radios outside.

"I went to check on Lily," Mrs. Gable repeated, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks as she wrung her apron in her trembling hands. "The bedroom window was unlocked, and her bed... her bed was empty. She's not in the room, Mrs. Vance. She's gone."

Elena felt the floor drop out from beneath her feet. The flashing red and blue lights from the police cruisers outside cast frantic, dancing shadows across the grand staircase, making the walls seem to spin. All the exhaustion, the fear, and the shock evaporated in a single second, replaced by a mother's absolute, unbridled terror.

"Lily!" Elena screamed, sprinting past Mrs. Gable and racing up the curved wooden stairs two at a time, her silk blouse fluttering wildly behind her.

"Mrs. Vance, wait! Stay back!" Marcus shouted, drawing his sidearm and sprinting up the stairs right behind her, followed by two armed tactical agents.

Elena burst through the door of Lily’s bedroom. The room was untouched, perfectly neat, with pink pillows and stuffed animals resting neatly on the mattress. But the French doors leading out to the second-story balcony stood wide open, letting the cold night wind whip the sheer white curtains into a frenzy.

Elena rushed to the balcony railing, looking down into the dark courtyard below. There was no sign of her daughter—only a small, pink velvet hair bow resting on the cold stone floor near the edge of the terrace, caught in the howling wind.

"They took her," Elena sobbed, gripping the stone railing so hard her knuckles turned pure white. "The intruder... he didn't just want the files. He took my little girl."

Marcus stepped out onto the balcony beside her, scanning the dark perimeter with his tactical flashlight. He pressed his radio communicator against his collar, his face set in a grim, hard line.

"All units, lock down the entire estate perimeter immediately," Marcus commanded into his radio, his voice sharp and urgent. "The suspect has taken a six-year-old hostage. Check every vehicle, every outbuilding, every foot of these grounds. Nobody leaves this property."

Elena turned away from the railing, her eyes wild with panic. She grabbed Marcus by the lapel of his jacket, her face inches from his, tears streaming freely down her cheeks.

"Julian," Elena choked out, the name tasting like poison in her mouth. "Julian knows who this man is. He knew this was going to happen. You have to take me to him right now. If you don't let me talk to my husband, my daughter is going to die."

Marcus looked down at her with deep, profound sympathy, but his eyes conveyed a sobering reality.

"We can take you to the holding facility, Mrs. Vance," Marcus replied softly, gently prying her fingers off his jacket. "But Julian is currently locked in a high-security federal interrogation room downtown, and as of twenty minutes ago... he refused to speak a single word to anyone."
