Chapter 4 - The Empty Mansion

The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving the grand dining room in a suffocating, unnatural silence. The remaining guests hurriedly gathered their coats, whispering nervously among themselves before rushing out of the house as if fleeing a sinking ship. None of them offered Elena a comforting word or a sympathetic glance; society’s elite had no desire to be associated with a sinking federal scandal. Within ten minutes, the sprawling mansion was entirely empty, save for Elena, little Lily, and the loyal housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, who stood quietly by the doorway with a concerned expression.

"Mrs. Vance, let me take Lily upstairs to bed," Mrs. Gable said softly, breaking the heavy stillness. "She's exhausted, and what happened tonight was far too much for a little girl to process."

Elena nodded numbly, kneeling down to kiss Lily’s forehead. The child’s eyes were heavy with sleep and lingering fright. As Mrs. Gable led the little girl up the grand curved staircase, Elena sank heavily into one of the velvet-upholstered dining chairs. The crystal chandelier flickered once, casting long, dancing shadows across the expensive china that remained untouched on the long banquet table.

She stared at Julian’s empty chair, his linen napkin still crumpled beside his crystal water glass. That was when she noticed it—a small, dark leather notebook partially hidden beneath the centerpiece of silver candlesticks. Julian must have dropped it during the initial chaos before the federal agents arrived.

Elena reached across the table, her fingers brushing the worn leather. She pulled it toward her, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She flipped open the cover. The pages were filled with Julian’s frantic, jagged handwriting, detailing a series of financial transactions dating back long before her father's passing.

But it was the final entry, written just hours before the dinner party, that made her breath catch in her throat. It wasn't about the charity funds or the offshore accounts. It was a list of names, addresses, and dates—and right at the top was her own father's name, accompanied by a chilling notation regarding the sudden decline of his health.

"No," Elena whispered aloud to the empty room, her hands shaking violently as she read the medical notes Julian had carefully copied down from an unknown source.

The notes suggested her father’s death was not from natural causes, as the official hospital reports had stated, but rather the result of a slow-acting toxin administered over several months—all to accelerate the transfer of the estate into Julian's control.

Before Elena could process the sheer horror of what she was reading, the security system’s main console in the hallway beeped sharply, signaling an unauthorized access alert at the rear service entrance of the mansion.
