Chapter 7 - The Threat at the Top of the Stairs

The mention of Lily’s name sent a shockwave of raw terror through Elena’s veins. Every drop of fear vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, primal fury. The intruder wasn't just after documents anymore; he was using her daughter as leverage.
Elena abandoned all caution, scrambling swiftly across the damp concrete floor of the coal cellar toward the far corner where the old wooden utility stairs led upward to the garage. She pulled herself up the steps as quietly as possible, pushing open the heavy fire door that led directly into the attached three-car garage.
The garage was dimly lit by a single amber security bulb hanging from the rafters. Parked in the center was Julian’s luxury sedan, its driver-side door standing wide open—the very car he had planned to use for his hurried escape before the federal agents arrived.
Elena sprinted across the concrete floor toward the interior door leading back into the main hallway of the house, intending to race upstairs to Lily’s bedroom before the intruder could reach the west wing. But as her hand touched the brass doorknob, the heavy lock clicked loudly from the other side.
Someone had just locked the door from the hallway.
Panic surged through her chest again. She was trapped in the garage. Behind her, the heavy fire door leading up from the basement cellar began to rattle violently as the intruder forced it open.
"You're making this very difficult, Elena," the gravelly voice called out from the dark stairwell, the sound echoing ominously off the concrete walls.
Elena’s eyes scanned the garage frantically for another exit. The large automated overhead doors leading out to the driveway were sealed shut, controlled by a digital keypad near the front entrance that required a security code she didn't have time to punch in.
She needed a weapon, or a distraction. On the workbench beside her, half-buried under a pile of mechanic’s tools, sat Julian’s heavy brass fireplace poker—an iron rod he must have brought down from the study earlier that evening.
Without hesitation, Elena grabbed the heavy metal poker, turning around just as the basement fire door burst open with a loud crash.
The intruder stepped into the amber light of the garage, his face hidden beneath a dark tactical hood, holding a heavy-duty crowbar in his gloved hand. He stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes locking onto hers with cold amusement.
"Put the poker down, Elena," the man said smoothly, stepping closer. "You're playing a game you've already lost."
"Stay away from my daughter," Elena warned, her voice trembling slightly, though she gripped the heavy metal rod with both hands.
"Your husband made a lot of promises to a lot of dangerous people," the intruder replied, taking another slow step forward. "And when Julian goes down for embezzlement, someone has to take the fall for the rest of the operation. That someone is going to be you, unless you give me the rest of those medical files right now."

Before Elena could swing the heavy poker, the garage lights suddenly flickered wildly, and the sound of flashing blue and red sirens began wailing loudly from the driveway outside.
