Chapter 12 - The Trap at Warehouse 12

The tactical vehicle idled in the deep shadows behind the rusting shipping containers, its engine humming a low, menacing note. Elena ignored Marcus’s warning, her hand slipping free of his grip as she pushed the heavy door open and slipped out onto the gravel road. The cold harbor wind whipped her dark hair across her face, carrying the sharp, metallic scent of saltwater and decaying timber.

"Elena, get back inside! It's a perimeter breach!" Marcus hissed urgently, stepping out of the SUV right behind her with his service weapon drawn and ready.

"They know we're here," Elena whispered back, her eyes fixed on the illuminated interior of Warehouse 12 fifty yards away.

The second figure standing in the shadows—the scarred man known as Viktor—slowly raised his hand, pointing a heavy-duty detonator directly toward the roof of the warehouse where a complex network of overhead wiring connected to several barrels of industrial solvent.

Through the grimy glass windows, little Lily could be seen struggling against the ropes binding her to the wooden chair, her small mouth moving in silent cries that couldn't be heard over the whistling wind.

"Drop your weapons and step into the light, Federal Agent!" Viktor’s gravelly voice echoed loudly across the open concrete yard, amplified by a handheld megaphone. "If anyone crosses that yellow line before I count to three, the entire building goes up in flames with the girl inside!"

Marcus lowered his stance, keeping his weapon aimed at Viktor’s chest while speaking into his shoulder mic. "Sniper team one, do you have a clean shot on the target?"

"Negative, sir. The hostage is directly in the line of fire. We can't take the shot," came the calm, taut reply over the encrypted earpiece.

"One..." Viktor shouted loudly, his thumb hovering inches above the red button on the detonator box.

Elena didn't wait for Marcus to negotiate. Driven by pure, maternal instinct that overrode all fear and tactical protocol, she stepped out from behind the protective cover of the shipping container and began walking directly across the open gravel yard toward the warehouse doors.

"Elena, what are you doing?! Get back!" Marcus yelled, lunging forward to grab her, but hesitating instantly as Viktor’s finger tightened over the detonator switch.

"Two..." Viktor sneered, his cold eyes locking onto Elena as she marched toward him with unyielding determination, her head held high and her eyes blazing with fury.

"Stop counting!" Elena shouted back, her voice echoing sharply off the corrugated metal walls of the surrounding structures. "You want the hard drives? You want the medical files Julian hid? They're right here in my coat pocket. Let my daughter go, and I'll hand them over to you right now."

Viktor paused, lowering the megaphone slightly as a wicked, knowing smile spread across his scarred face. He gestured with his head toward the chair where Lily was tied.

"Bring them here, Elena," Viktor called out. "Walk through the front doors alone, and leave the federal agent behind. If I see even a shadow of backup, I push the button."

Elena took a deep, steadying breath, stepping past the yellow line and walking toward the dark, yawning entrance of the warehouse, while Marcus watched in horror, powerless to intervene.
