Chapter 5 - The Driverless Trap

Captain Loasing drew her sidearm in a smooth, practiced motion, the matte finish of the service pistol catching the dim fluorescent light of the parking garage. She signaled for the General to stay behind a concrete pillar while she advanced cautiously toward the idling staff car. The engine hummed with a low, electronic vibration, but the cabin was entirely dark, illuminated only by the pulsing amber glow of the dashboard navigation screen.

She peered through the reinforced driver-side window, keeping her finger indexed neatly along the frame of the pistol. The driver’s seat was empty, but resting squarely on the passenger cushion was a heavy, manila file folder tied with a frayed red string. Written across the front in bold, black marker was her own full name: Captain Sarah Loasing.

“Clear?” the General called out from his sheltered position behind the pillar.

“Clear of personnel, General,” Loasing replied, keeping her senses sharp as she scanned the shadowy corners of the parking garage for any movement. “There's a package inside. It has my name on it.”

She reached out with her left hand, punching the electronic door release button while maintaining cover with her weapon. The door popped open with a soft pneumatic hiss, releasing the faint, distinct scent of ozone and burning plastic. Using the barrel of her sidearm, she nudged the manila folder open. Resting on top of the documents was not a paper file, but a small, glowing lithium-ion battery wired directly to a digital timer that was currently counting down from three minutes.

“It's a proximity trigger,” Loasing whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs as she read the glowing red numbers: 02:45... 02:44.

“Back away, Captain!” the General ordered, lunging forward to grab her shoulder and pull her clear of the vehicle just as the garage’s overhead security cameras suddenly whirred to life, swiveling in unison to point directly at the staff car.

Before they could reach safety behind the concrete pillar, the digital timer on the passenger seat abruptly beeped, and a recorded voice echoed from the car's internal speakers.

“Tick-tock, Captain,” the synthesized voice mocked. “You missed the deadline to resign.”
