Chapter 3 - The Metadata Mirror

The massive projection screen flickered to life, bathing the opulent banquet hall in a harsh, cold blue light. The video displayed on the screen showed the service entrance of the hotel from three hours earlier. In the crisp, high-definition footage, Julian Vance could be clearly seen leaning against a concrete pillar, whispering urgently into a second, burner smartphone while handing a thick manila envelope to a man wearing maintenance overalls.
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered crowd. Julian’s face drained of all color, the bravado evaporating entirely from his posture as he realized his secure alibi had just been utterly dismantled.
“That proves nothing!” Julian yelled, his voice cracking with rising panic as he lunged forward in a desperate attempt to snatch the senior official’s digital voice recorder.
Captain Loasing moved with instantaneous, flawless combat reflexes. She intercepted his lunge with a single, fluid pivot, catching his wrist in a firm grip and applying just enough pressure to halt his momentum without escalating the situation into a physical brawl. She didn't squeeze hard enough to bruise, but she held him fast, neutralizing his erratic movement with absolute authority.
“Step back, Mr. Vance,” Loasing instructed quietly, her voice remaining eerily calm while the civilian struggled uselessly against her hold. “Assaulting an officer at a formal function will only add another charge to the federal indictment waiting for you.”
The senior official pulled the voice recorder away, slipping it safely inside his tuxedo jacket pocket. He looked at Julian with deep, undisguised disgust before turning his critical gaze toward the cluster of corporate executives who had funded Vance’s defense contracts.
“Security,” the senior official commanded, raising his hand. “Detain Mr. Vance and secure all his electronic devices immediately.”
Two burly military policemen in full dress uniform materialized from the shadows near the ballroom exit, stepping past the trembling guests to flank Julian. As they placed heavy hands on his shoulders, Julian glared venomously at Loasing, realizing his career as a high-level contractor was completely over.

“You think I am the mastermind?” Julian sneered bitterly as the guards began dragging him toward the heavy oak doors. “You don't even know who is paying the bills, Captain. Look at the file I left in your quarters.”
