Chapter 2 - The Spliced Confession

The room fell into an unnatural, heavy silence as the distorted audio looped a second time. The digital waveform on the black voice recorder danced erratically, pulsing in sync with the fabricated threat. Captain Loasing stared down at the small plastic device, her wide, fearful eyes belying the otherwise disciplined stillness of her posture. She knew that exact phrase had never left her lips. It was a Frankenstein creation of audio software, stitched together syllable by syllable to destroy her reputation before her promotion board convened next week.

Julian Vance hastily lowered his smartphone, his triumphant smirk faltering just a fraction as the murmurs of the crowd shifted from sympathy toward skepticism. The senior military official holding the recorder frowned deeply, staring down at the device as if it carried a biological contaminant.

“Where did you acquire this file, Julian?” the senior official demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register that commanded immediate obedience.

Julian swallowed hard, taking half a step backward into the cluster of blinking camera lights. “It was sent to an anonymous tip line this afternoon. It proves she is unstable, General. Look at her. She isn't even denying it.”

“Because it is a calculated fabrication,” Loasing finally spoke. Her tone was unnervingly steady, lacking any defensive tremor. She turned her head slightly, locking her gaze onto Julian with a quiet intensity that made the civilian sweat beneath his custom tuxedo. “That audio file uses a voice imprint from my security briefing on Tuesday, combined with phonemes stolen from an open microphone during the budget committee hearing last month. Anyone with basic signal intelligence training can spot the digital stitching.”

Julian forced a nervous laugh, shaking his head dismissively. “You are grasping at straws, Captain. The timestamp matches your arrival time in this exact district.”

Before Loasing could deliver the counter-argument that would dismantle his entire narrative, the woman in black lace stepped forward from the edge of the room. She held up her phone, pressing a button to cast a high-definition video onto the massive projection screen behind the main banquet stage.

“He is lying about the timeline,” the woman stated clearly. “And my metadata proves it.”
