Chapter 1 - The Banquet Ambush

The chandelier in the grand ballroom cast a brilliant, amber glow over the sea of black tuxedos and immaculate dress uniforms. Captain Loasing stood near the edge of the mahogany refreshment table, her posture rigid, her mind replaying the subtle smear of red wine deliberately splashed across her lapel just moments before. She smoothed the fabric with a practiced, calm demeanor, refusing to let the insult rattle her composure in front of the assembled dignitaries.

Beside her, Julian Vance, a civilian defense contractor dressed in an expensive tuxedo, shifted his weight uncomfortably. He raised his smartphone, angled the camera toward her, and then pointed a trembling finger while turning to address the surrounding crowd of influential guests and senior officers. His face twisted into a mask of calculated indignation.

“She threatened me before we even got here!” Julian shouted, his voice cutting sharply through the polite murmur of the high-society gathering.

Several guests immediately lifted their phones, recording the sudden outburst with predatory fascination. Across the room, a woman in a black lace dress stood abruptly beside another seated officer, her phone glowing as she addressed her companion.

“My camera caught something earlier,” the woman in black announced, her voice carrying across the polished hardwood floor.

Julian smirked, thinking he had successfully cornered the decorated military officer. But the true trap snapped shut when a senior official pushed through the crowd, pulling out a sleek black digital voice recorder. He pressed play. The tiny screen flickered with a green audio waveform, displaying a jagged digital time code.

From the tiny speaker, a harsh, synthesized voice whispered through the room with chilling clarity.

“Beat seven thirteen... seven to frame her.”

Captain Loasing froze, her breath catching in her throat as she recognized the voice as her own, digitally spliced and altered. Julian smiled wider, believing he had won. But as the recording continued to loop, a second, overlapping voice emerged from the speaker, accidentally capturing the true identity of the man who had ordered the hit on her career.
