Chapter 7 - The Voice at the Door

“Don't open it!” Marcus hissed, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from the desk and holding it like a weapon.

Julian stared at the shaking brass knob of the study door. The frantic rattling grew louder, accompanied by the heavy thud of a shoulder slamming against the solid oak wood. Clara was no longer acting like a weeping bride; her voice had dropped its pathetic veneer, replaced by desperate, venomous urgency.

“Julian, you fool! If they get through that door, they won't just kill you, they’ll take Leo too!” Clara screamed from the hallway, her fists hammering furiously against the wood. “Open the door! We have to bargain with them!”

Julian’s mind raced. Every instinct told him that letting Clara back into the room was signing their death warrants. But she had a point about one thing: the study had no other exits except the shattered French windows, which opened directly onto a twenty-foot drop into the rocky courtyard below, right where the sniper was waiting.

“Dad,” Leo whispered, tugging gently on Julian’s black suit sleeve. The boy pointed toward the massive Persian rug covering the center of the study floor. “Grandpa showed me the trapdoor once when we were playing hide and seek.”

Julian looked down at his son, stunned. “A trapdoor?”

“Under the desk,” Marcus added, quickly crawling forward to examine the baseboards. He shoved the heavy mahogany chair aside and began frantically brushing away the thick wool edges of the rug. Sure enough, a square iron ring was flush with the hardwood floorboards.

“Hurry!” Marcus grunted, slipping his fingers through the iron ring and pulling upward with all his might.

With a rusty groan, the heavy wooden floor panel lifted, revealing a dark, narrow stone staircase descending into the damp earth beneath the foundation of the mansion. A faint, cool draft billowed up from the darkness, carrying the scent of damp stone and old iron.

Outside, the heavy thud against the study door intensified. The lock gave way with a loud, metallic snap. The door swung violently open, crashing against the interior wall.

Clara stumbled into the room, her white wedding dress torn at the hem, her hair tangled and wild. But she wasn't alone. Behind her stood two men in identical black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas, holding suppressed submachine guns leveled directly at Julian and Marcus.

“Drop the phone, Julian,” Clara said, her voice dropping all pretense of emotion as a cold, cruel smile finally curved her lips. “The game is over.”
