Chapter 12 - Sirens in the Fog

The black SUV tore up the winding gravel driveway, its tires kicking up spray and mud in the misty night air. Ahead of them, the grand entrance of the Vance estate was lit up like a movie set by the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers and federal black-and-whites.

Marcus slammed on the brakes as an armed federal marshal stepped out into the path of the vehicle, holding up a badge and a hand signaling them to halt. Marcus put the car in park and killed the engine, letting out a long, shuddering breath that left his shoulders visibly sagging.

“We made it,” Marcus whispered, leaning his head back against the leather headrest.

Julian didn't waste a second. He immediately turned around in his seat to check on Leo, whose face was illuminated by the soft glow of his smartphone screen.

“Are you okay, buddy?” Julian asked, his voice thick with emotion as he reached back to gently touch his son’s shoulder.

“I’m fine, Dad,” Leo answered quietly, looking up with big, clear eyes. “Can we go home now? I’m really tired of wearing this bow tie.”

A genuine, bittersweet smile broke across Julian’s face for the first time in what felt like a lifetime. He leaned over and unclipped Leo’s tight bow tie, tossing it onto the dashboard.

The front doors of the SUV were suddenly yanked open. A tall federal marshal in a dark tactical vest peered inside, his hand resting reassuringly on his holster.

“Are you Julian Vance?” the marshal asked firmly.

“Yes, that’s me,” Julian replied, stepping out of the vehicle with his hands visible. “My son has the primary evidence files on his phone. The conspirators are still down by the boathouse.”

The marshal nodded sharply, gesturing to two uniformed officers standing nearby. “Take the boy and Mr. Vance to the command vehicle for medical evaluation and debriefing. We’ve already intercepted the communication feeds. The federal cyber-crime division has secured the cloud drive.”

As officers moved in to secure the area, Julian caught a glimpse of Clara being led up the driveway in handcuffs. Her white wedding dress was ruined, covered in mud and dirt, her hair wild and tangled. She didn't look at Julian as she passed; her eyes were fixed entirely on the ground, defeated by her own greed.

Behind her, the armed operatives were being disarmed and zip-tied by federal agents one by one. The grand corporate conspiracy that had threatened to destroy his family’s legacy was crumbling into dust under the harsh lights of justice.

Julian felt a small hand slip into his. He looked down; Leo was holding his fingers tightly, walking beside him toward the warm glow of the command vehicle.

“Dad?” Leo asked softly as they approached the open door of the van.

“Yeah, buddy?” Julian replied, squeezing his son’s small hand.
