Chapter 2 - The Sound of Deception

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning vents high above the chandelier. Every eye in the room remained locked on Leo’s small smartphone. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He recognized that phone; it was an old device he had let Leo play games on, but he had wiped the memory clean months ago. Or so he had thought.
“Leo, hand me the phone right now,” Julian ordered, taking a slow, menacing step toward the altar. His face was pale, stripped of all wedding-day joy, replaced entirely by a cold, mounting dread.
Clara shrank back into the folds of her massive white dress, shaking her head frantically. “Julian, don’t let him play whatever fake thing he downloaded. It’s a prank. Kids do this. He’s upset about the divorce, he’s upset about us moving in together!”
“Stay back, Dad!” Leo yelled, stepping backward with surprising agility, keeping the microphone clutched to his chest. “You said you wanted me to hear the truth! You said adults don’t lie to each other!”
Before Julian could lunge forward to grab the device, Leo pressed his thumb firmly against the screen. For a second, there was only static hiss echoing through the massive overhead speakers. Then, a voice cut through the silence. It was unmistakably Clara’s voice, crisp, cold, and utterly devoid of warmth.
“Just wait until the paperwork clears, Marcus. Once we get the deed to the estate, I’ll sign over my half of the debt, and we can finally ditch the kid in boarding school.”
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom like a freezing wind. Clara’s face drained of every drop of color, leaving her looking remarkably like a ghost wrapped in silk. She didn't try to defend herself immediately; instead, her eyes darted frantically toward the exit doors.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. He slowly turned his head to look at the woman he had promised to love for the rest of his life, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal whisper.
“Who the hell is Marcus?” Julian asked, his eyes bloodshot and wide with betrayal.

Clara opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Before she could form a single syllable, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slowly began to creak open.
