Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Witness

All heads turned instantly toward the grand entrance. The heavy oak doors, decorated with intricate golden scrollwork, swung inward with agonizing slowness. Standing in the threshold was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a rumpled charcoal suit. He had short dark hair, sharp features, and an expression that was a bizarre mixture of profound guilt and desperate urgency. It was Marcus Vance, Clara’s longtime business partner and, according to the whispers that instantly erupted among the wedding guests, her shadow.
Clara let out a choked sob, her hands flying to her face as she realized the trap had completely closed around her.
“Marcus… what are you doing here?” Clara whispered, her voice laced with sheer panic.
Marcus didn't look at Clara. His eyes were fixed entirely on Julian, who stood frozen midway between the altar and the pews. Julian’s fists were clenched so tightly at his sides that his fingernails dug deep into his palms, drawing tiny beads of blood that he didn't even feel.
“I had to come, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice echoing clearly through the empty space of the ballroom without needing a microphone. He took three deliberate steps forward, ignoring the angry murmurs of the stunned guests. “I couldn't let her go through with this. Not after what she planned to do to your family’s legacy.”
Eleanor pushed past Julian, her face contorted with rage as she pointed a trembling finger at the newcomer. “Get out of here, you scoundrel! You and this woman have been conspiring against my son!”
“Mother, quiet,” Julian commanded, his voice dead flat, sending a shiver down Eleanor’s spine. He hadn't broken eye contact with Marcus for a single second. The betrayal wasn't just a romantic failure anymore; it was an execution of trust that spanned years.
Julian turned his gaze back to Leo, who was still standing tall, holding the microphone with surprising steadiness for a seven-year-old child. The boy’s eyes were heavy with unshed tears, but he held his ground.
“He helped me find it, Dad,” Leo said quietly, nodding toward Marcus. “Uncle Marcus felt bad. He gave me the password to Clara’s cloud storage last night.”
Julian blinked, processing the devastating new puzzle piece. He swung his head back toward Marcus, who gave a slow, guilty nod of confirmation.

“She was going to take the house, Julian,” Marcus confessed, stepping closer until he was standing just feet from the groom. “And she wasn't going to stop there. She has a second file, one she didn't want me to see either. And it involves your father’s will.”
