Chapter 8: The Second Message

Before they could fully process the implications of the psychiatric report, a sharp ping echoed through the storage unit. It was the distinct notification sound of David’s smartphone, cutting through the muffled silence of the basement level. David stood up, pulling the device from his pocket. The screen lit up with a new text message from an unknown number. He unlocked the phone and read the message aloud, his voice tight with tension. "You found the trunk," the text read. "Now look at the bottom of the trunk under the false lining. The truth about who took her is waiting for you there." Clara spun around, staring back down into the open leather trunk. She hadn't noticed any false bottom earlier, but under the harsh glare of the flashlight, she saw a hairline seam running along the interior baseboards.
Elena knelt beside Clara and ran her fingers along the edge of the wooden partition inside the trunk. With a slight click, a hidden panel popped upward, revealing a narrow compartment that had been completely concealed from view. Inside lay a single item: a modern, high-capacity flash drive encased in black plastic, bearing a small white sticker with a single set of GPS coordinates. Clara picked up the drive, feeling its unexpected weight in her palm. The presence of a modern digital storage device inside a trunk that had been sealed for fifteen years was impossible. It meant someone had been in this storage unit very recently, planting new evidence right under their noses while they were busy uncovering the old past.
David’s expression hardened into one of cold anger. "Someone is playing a game with us," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "They want us to follow a trail, step by step, to a specific destination." Clara looked at the GPS coordinates printed on the sticker. She pulled out her own phone and plugged the numbers into the mapping application. The screen zoomed in on a remote wooded area about twenty miles outside the city limits, near the old coastal cliffs where she and Sarah used to hike during their college years. The realization hit her with the force of a physical blow; the trail was leading them back to the exact place where the nightmare had begun twenty years ago.
