Chapter 13: The Closing Circle

As the confirmation message lit up the laptop screen, the distant sound of an engine broke through the howling wind. Twin beams of headlights cut through the heavy rain down the gravel access road, painting the wet pine trees in a harsh, glaring white. A sleek black SUV rounded the final bend and came to a skidding halt fifty yards away, blocking the only exit from the parking area. The doors flew open, and two men in dark suits stepped out into the downpour, their movements swift and purposeful. One of them was a local police lieutenant whom David recognized from the town council meetings; the other was an armed private security operative carrying a heavy black case.

David stepped in front of Clara and Mrs. Gable, his body tensing for confrontation, but Elena remained remarkably calm, sliding the laptop into her waterproof bag and stepping backward toward the shelter of the rotting ranger station. "We need to move, now," Elena urged quietly, grabbing Clara’s arm. The men in suits began walking toward them across the gravel, shouting orders over the roar of the storm for them to step away from the vehicle. Mrs. Gable stood her ground, her face hardened with the fierce defiance of a mother who had waited twenty years for this exact confrontation. "Let them come," she said coldly. "The files are already in federal hands. They can't stop what’s coming now."

The police lieutenant reached them first, his hand resting menacingly on the holster of his service weapon as rain dripped from the brim of his hat. "Step away from the vehicle immediately," the officer commanded, his voice tight with suppressed panic. "You are trespassing on restricted property." David didn't flinch. "We're not going anywhere, Lieutenant. And I suggest you check your own phone, because the federal Marshals are already five miles out." The officer’s expression flickered with momentary uncertainty before hardening again, but before he could draw his weapon, the sound of heavy chopper blades suddenly drowned out the wind from above.
