Chapter 11: The Truth Unveiled

Mrs. Gable reached into her deep coat pocket and withdrew a small laptop computer protected inside a waterproof plastic sleeve. She placed it carefully on the hood of their parked car, the metal surface pinging under the steady rainfall. Without a word, Clara pulled the black flash drive from her pocket and plugged it into the side port of the laptop. The screen flickered to life, casting a cold blue light across their wet faces. There was a single video file waiting on the desktop. With trembling fingers, Clara used the mousepad to click play. The video opened with grainy, low-resolution footage dated twenty years ago—the exact night Sarah disappeared, recorded from a security camera mounted on the back of the old ranger station where they now stood.

The three of them watched in horrified fascination as the figures on the screen moved in the dim light. They saw a young Sarah arguing with a man near the edge of the cliff—a man neither Clara nor David recognized at first. But as the camera angle shifted, the streetlamp illuminated the man’s face with stark clarity. It was Arthur Vance, a prominent local politician and philanthropist who had funded the college’s scholarship program two decades ago—and who was currently running for state senate in a high-profile election campaign. On the screen, Vance could be seen grabbing Sarah’s arm, forcing her toward a waiting vehicle as she struggled against him. The audio was muffled by the wind, but Sarah’s desperate cries were unmistakably clear.

Clara clutched her head with both hands, a wave of profound dizziness washing over her as the pieces of the puzzle slammed violently into place. "He was the one," Clara whispered, horror coating her words. "Sarah told me she was meeting someone important that night, someone who promised her a job in politics. I thought she was just being ambitious." Mrs. Gable placed a trembling hand on Clara’s arm, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Vance paid off the lead detective to bury the investigation. He ruined my daughter's life, and then he buried her body somewhere in these woods. I’ve spent two decades gathering this proof, but I couldn't release it alone. I needed someone with a clean record, someone connected to the past, to bring this forward to the federal authorities."
