Chapter 10: The Figure in the Rain

The figure did not move as Clara, David, and Elena approached cautiously across the muddy clearing. The rain fell harder now, plastering Clara’s hair to her cheeks and soaking through their jackets, but none of them turned back. As they drew closer, the silhouette resolved into an older woman wrapped in a heavy dark coat, her face obscured by the broad canopy of the umbrella. When they came to a halt a few yards away, the woman lowered the umbrella slightly, revealing a face lined with age and sorrow, but marked by an unmistakable familiarity. It was Mrs. Gable, the mother of Sarah, who had disappeared twenty years ago—a woman Clara hadn't seen since the frantic police interviews of her youth.
Mrs. Gable looked older, her hair completely silver, but her eyes held the same piercing intensity that Clara remembered from all those years ago. "You came," Mrs. Gable said, her voice steady and calm despite the howling wind. "I wasn't sure if the letter would be enough to bring you out of your comfortable life, Clara." Clara stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Mrs. Gable? What is this? Why did you send those letters and lead us out here?" Mrs. Gable looked past Clara to David and Elena, then back to the young woman. "Because for twenty years, the police lied, the newspapers lied, and you lived your life believing a convenient lie, Clara. Sarah didn't run away. She was taken, and I spent every day of my life trying to find out who did it."
David stepped defensively between Clara and the older woman. "If you have answers, why play these games with anonymous notes and hidden flash drives? Why not just come to us directly?" Mrs. Gable let out a bitter, humorless laugh that was instantly swallowed by the wind. "Directly? David, do you have any idea how many times I tried to talk to Clara over the years? She blocked my calls, she moved away, she built a fortress of denial. The only way to pierce that armor was to force her to look at the evidence with her own eyes." Elena stepped up beside David, her voice calm and authoritative. "Mrs. Gable, we found the psychiatric report and the flash drive in the storage unit. What is on that drive?"
