Chapter 12: The Choice of a Lifetime

The wind howled across the cliffs, whipping the rain into a furious horizontal sheet that stung their faces. David stared at the laptop screen, watching the looped video of Arthur Vance dragging Sarah into the shadows of the old ranger station. The political implications were staggering, but the human cost was devastating. "If we take this to the local police, Vance will intercept it," David said, his voice hard with resolve. "He still controls half the department. We need federal intervention, and we need it immediately." Elena nodded in agreement, pulling her phone from her pocket despite the driving rain. "I have a contact at the federal bureau in Seattle. If we send them the digital files directly right now, they can secure a warrant before Vance realizes we have the footage."

Clara stood frozen, staring out at the turbulent ocean below where the waves crashed endlessly against the jagged rocks. For twenty years, she had carried the silent burden of guilt, believing her own silence had somehow contributed to her friend's disappearance. Now, standing in the storm with Mrs. Gable, she realized that her silence had been engineered by a powerful man who had manipulated everyone around him. She looked at the laptop screen, then down at the flash drive still inserted in the port. "Do it, Elena," Clara said firmly, her voice cutting through the roar of the wind with sudden, unshakeable strength. "Send everything. Let’s end this once and for all."

Elena worked quickly on the laptop, transferring the encrypted files directly to her federal contact while Mrs. Gable watched with a look of profound, long-awaited relief on her weathered face. David kept watch down the access road, his eyes scanning the gloom for any sign of headlights or unwanted arrivals. The transfer bar on the screen inched forward, crawling painfully slow over the weak mobile connection. Every second felt like an eternity as they waited for the digital package to clear the local towers and reach the federal servers. Finally, a green checkmark flashed on the screen, accompanied by a small notification box confirming successful delivery to the Department of Justice.
