Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The afternoon sunlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows seemed to lose all its warmth, casting long, cold shadows across the modern living room. Julian stood rigid, his chest heaving as he stared at the thick manila folder clutched in Arthur Vance’s manicured hands. The lawyer’s momentary hesitation was all the confirmation Julian needed.
"Open it," Julian commanded, his voice dead flat, carrying a chilling authority that made even Arthur hesitate. "Open the folder, Vance. Right now."
Margaret stepped forward, her expression hardening into stubborn defiance. "Don't you dare, Arthur. That document is privileged legal correspondence protected under family estate protocols. Julian has no right—"
"It's my house, Mom!" Julian roared, finally losing the last thread of his composure. The shout echoed off the minimalist walls, startling even the dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. "My name is on the mortgage, my life is tied to this property, and that woman you tried to frame is my wife! Now you open that folder, Mr. Vance, or I throw you through that glass window myself."
Arthur Vance swallowed hard, looking at the towering, furious man standing before him. Slowly, with deliberate caution, the lawyer unclasped the metal prongs of the manila folder and pulled out a stack of crisp, heavy-stock paper. He flipped past the first page and handed the second document directly to Julian.
Julian’s eyes scanned the legal jargon, his breathing turning shallow and ragged. Clara stepped closer, reading over his shoulder. Her hands trembled as the cruel architecture of Margaret's plan laid itself bare in black and white.
"A post-nuptial financial forfeiture clause," Clara read aloud, her voice barely a whisper. "Triggered by any documented misdemeanor or financial discrepancy... signed with a forged digital signature in my name?"
Julian looked up from the paper, his eyes blazing with a fury that terrified even Margaret. He turned his gaze slowly toward his mother, who had retreated another step toward the entryway.
"You forged my wife's signature," Julian said, each word spaced out like falling stones. "You drafted a legal separation agreement that strips us of our home, our savings, and our business loans, and you staged a fake theft just to trick me into enforcing it."
"I did it to save you!" Margaret cried out, her voice cracking with desperate justification as she threw her hands up. "Clara is an anchor dragging you down into poverty! Look at your life, Julian! You used to be a rising partner at the architecture firm, and now you're drowning in debt because of her medical expenses and her failing freelance projects!"
"My projects are failing because you sabotage every client I book!" Clara shouted, the pain of years of subtle, toxic interference finally boiling over into the open. "You call them behind my back, you tell them I'm unreliable, you pull strings with local vendors just to keep us financially dependent on your approval!"
Arthur Vance coughed awkwardly, trying to step toward the door. "If my presence is no longer required for the execution of—"
"Shut up, Arthur," Julian muttered without turning his head. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his own phone, and tapped the screen twice. "Nobody is leaving this room. Because while you were busy playing legal theater, I forwarded a copy of that forged signature to the state bar association."

Arthur Vance froze, his face turning the color of curdled milk.
