Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault

Margaret stiffened under Julian's hand, her rigid posture suddenly betraying a flicker of genuine panic. The fiery, righteous anger that had fueled her screaming match a moment ago evaporated, replaced by a tight, defensive cornered look. She shrugged Julian’s hand off her shoulder with a sharp jerk.

"My phone? What does my phone have to do with anything?" Margaret demanded, her voice rising an octave in nervous deflection. "This isn't about me! This is about her draining five thousand dollars from my fixed income to support whatever reckless habits she's hiding!"

"Mom, unlock your phone," Julian repeated, his tone dropping into a dangerous, flat register that Clara had rarely heard in all their years of marriage. He didn't look at Clara; his entire focus was fixed on the older woman who had raised him. "If Clara didn't initiate the transfer from her device, and the routing number points to an external holding account linked to your master profile..." He paused, his jaw clenching. "Then someone with administrative access moved the money."

Clara stood frozen, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand. The tide of the argument was shifting, but the emotional sting of being instantly doubted by Julian hadn't faded. She kept the smartphone gripped tightly in her palm, its battery icon glowing softly in the bright afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows.

"You think I stole from myself?" Margaret shrieked, her hands flying to her chest in theatrical disbelief. "Have you lost your mind, Julian? Your wife has you completely brainwashed! Look at her! She's standing there with the proof right in her hand, and you're turning on your own mother?"

"I'm not turning on anyone," Julian said coldly, holding his hand out toward Margaret. "I just want the truth. Open the banking app, Mom. Now."

Margaret backed away, retreating toward the plush velvet armchair near the fireplace. She shook her head violently, her blue button-down shirt rustling with her nervous movements. "I left my phone upstairs on the charger. I'm not playing these games with you two. You're both ungrateful, and I am calling my lawyer."

As Margaret turned to rush toward the staircase, Clara’s phone buzzed violently in her hand. A new notification banner slid down across the screen, displaying a fresh transaction alert from the exact same account, timestamped two minutes ago while they were standing right there in the living room.

Clara stared down at the screen, her blood running cold as she read the recipient name on the new incoming deposit.
