Chapter 4 - The Ghost Deposit

The sharp buzz of the smartphone shattered the tense standoff in the living room. Margaret stopped dead in her tracks near the base of the stairs, her back still turned to them. Julian froze, his hand still extended in the empty air where Margaret’s arm had been a second before.

Clara looked down at her screen, her eyes wide with disbelief. The notification banner wasn't another withdrawal. It was a deposit. Five thousand dollars, transferred instantly back into the main joint account from an offshore holding entity named 'Veritas Holdings.'

"Julian," Clara breathed, her voice trembling as she held the screen out toward him. "Look at this. It just came back. Right now."

Julian stepped closer, his eyes scanning the glowing display. The color drained from his face entirely, leaving him looking ghost-white under the warm interior lighting. He reached out with a trembling finger and tapped the transaction details, expanding the hidden metadata that the banking app automatically generated for institutional transfers.

"Veritas Holdings," Julian read aloud, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked slowly from the phone up toward the stairs where Margaret was standing completely motionless. "Mom. Veritas Holdings is the parent company of the trust fund. The trust fund you swore you liquidated five years ago."

Margaret slowly turned around. The fiery rage was completely gone from her face, replaced by a cold, hardened mask that Clara had never seen before. The older woman didn't look like a panicked victim anymore; she looked like a general surveying the wreckage of a tactical retreat.

"You shouldn't have been poking around in accounts that don't belong to you, Clara," Margaret said, her voice eerily calm, devoid of all warmth.

"So you did it," Clara whispered, the final puzzle piece snapping into place with sickening clarity. The betrayal washed over her, heavier and colder than the initial accusation. "You framed me. You stole your own money, routed it through my access profile, and then screamed at me in my own home just to make me look like a criminal."

"I protected my son's inheritance," Margaret replied defensively, stepping back down one step, her chin held high. "You two are struggling. Everyone in this city knows Julian’s business is barely scraping by. I needed to see how you would react under pressure. I needed to see if you were loyal to this family, or if you were just waiting for a chance to rob us blind."

Julian stared at his mother, his expression twisting into a mask of pure agony and disgust. "You tested us? By framing my wife for a felony? Do you have any idea what that could have done to her? What it did to us?"

Before Margaret could answer, the front door swung wide open, and a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored grey suit stepped uninvited into the living room, holding a thick manila folder.
