Chapter 2 - The Sinking Foundation

The silence that followed Clara’s desperate accusation hung in the room like a physical barrier. Julian uncrossed his arms, his hands dropping limply to his sides as the color drained entirely from his face. The beige t-shirt he wore suddenly seemed too large for his rigid frame. He looked between his wife and Margaret, his lips parting as if to speak, but no sound came out.
Margaret scoffed, a harsh, dismissive sound that broke the terrible quiet. "Oh, stop it, Clara! Don't you dare try to drag Julian into your web of lies. Typical! Caught red-handed, and now you're trying to ruin a good man's reputation just to save your own skin."
"I'm not lying!" Clara cried out, stepping forward, holding the smartphone out like a shield. "Look at the routing numbers, Julian. Look at what your own mother set up behind our backs three months ago!"
Julian swallowed hard, taking a slow step toward them. His gaze flicked down to the phone screen, but he didn't reach out to take it. His eyes were shadowed with a sudden, agonizing panic that didn't look like guilt, but rather like the terror of a trap snapping shut.
"Clara," Julian said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "What are you talking about? What did my mother set up?"
"Don't play dumb with me, Julian!" Margaret snarled, spinning around to face her son, her expression shifting from absolute fury toward Clara to a sudden, defensive panic directed at him. "Your wife is manipulating you. She always has. She took the money to pay off those secret credit cards she's been hiding from you!"
Clara stared at Margaret, her breath catching in her throat. The sheer audacity of the counter-accusation made her dizzy. "Secret credit cards? Mom, you know damn well those were for the medical bills when Julian broke his leg last year. You told me to use that account as an emergency buffer!"
"I never said any such thing!" Margaret shouted, stepping directly between Julian and Clara, shielding her son physically from his wife. "You are a thief, Clara. And a liar. And if you don't transfer that money back right this second, I am calling the police to have you dragged out of this house in handcuffs."
Julian reached out slowly, placing a heavy hand on his mother’s shoulder. His face was entirely devoid of color, his eyes locked onto Clara's phone screen, where a hidden folder was just visible beneath the main balance.

"Mom," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Open your phone. Let me see your banking app right now."
