Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy oak front door banged softly against the interior wall as the stranger stepped into the bright modern living room. He carried himself with an arrogant, practiced ease, his tailored grey suit contrasting sharply with the casual domestic chaos of the room. He didn't look like a lost visitor; he moved like a man who owned the real estate beneath their feet.

Margaret’s face lit up with a fleeting expression of relief before she quickly masked it, straightening her blue button-down shirt. "Mr. Vance. You're early."

"Traffic on the interstate was surprisingly light, Mrs. Sterling," the man replied, his voice smooth and professional as he scanned the room. His cold eyes briefly flicked over Clara, who was still clutching her smartphone, and then landed on Julian, who stood frozen with his fists clenched at his sides.

"Who the hell are you?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl as he stepped protectively in front of Clara. "And why are you walking into my house unannounced?"

Mr. Vance offered a thin, patronizing smile, pulling a polished leather cardholder from his breast pocket. "My name is Arthur Vance. I am senior legal counsel for Sterling Holdings and the executor of Margaret’s estate. I was under the impression, Mr. Sterling, that you were fully aware of today's scheduled asset review."

"An asset review?" Clara interjected, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she stepped up beside Julian. She pointed the glowing screen of her smartphone directly at the lawyer. "Is that what you call framing me for a five-thousand-dollar theft? Forcing a fake transaction through my profile so your client could test my loyalty?"

Arthur Vance blinked, his professional composure faltering for a fraction of a second as his eyes darted to Margaret. He cleared his throat, adjusting his silk tie. "I am unaware of any entrapment schemes, madam. I was simply summoned here to oversee the legal transfer of remaining family assets following the completion of Mrs. Sterling's solvency audit."

"Solvency audit?" Julian shouted, the restraint finally snapping. He closed the distance between himself and the lawyer, stopping just inches away. "My mother staged a crime in our living room! She accused my wife of stealing, threatened us with the police, and you walk in here acting like this is a normal business meeting?"

Margaret stepped between them, her voice cutting through the rising tide of anger with chilling authority. "Calm down, Julian. Arthur is only here to finalize what I've already put in motion. And as for the audit—you brought this on yourselves by living beyond your means."

Clara stared at Margaret, a cold realization dawning in her chest. This wasn't just a cruel test of loyalty. It was a premeditated setup designed to sever Julian from her entirely.

"You didn't just want to test me," Clara said, her voice eerily quiet as she looked straight into Margaret's hardened eyes. "You're trying to divorce Julian from me by proving we're financially unstable. And Arthur has the papers in that folder, doesn't he?"

Arthur Vance looked away, but the guilty hesitation in his eyes confirmed every single word.
