Chapter 7 - The Hidden Exit

Julian’s muscles coiled like steel springs beneath the dark green fabric of his suit. With a sudden, explosive burst of movement, he pivoted sharply away from the marshals, clutching the infant securely against his chest with one arm while shoving the leading officer hard against the marble pillar with the other. The officer stumbled, his tactical belt scraping loudly against the stone.

"Stop right there! Federal order!" the second marshal shouted, drawing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt as he lunged forward.

Clara didn't hesitate. Seizing the fallen brown envelope of DNA results from the floor, she hurled it directly into the officer's face, scattering the official pages across the air like a flurry of white snow. The distraction bought Julian precious seconds. He vaulted over the low mahogany console table near the hallway entrance, sliding across the polished floor directly toward the concealed service corridor used by the estate staff.

"After him! Don't let them reach the perimeter!" Elena's voice shrieked from the balcony, all her careful composure finally shattering into raw, panicked desperation as she realized her control was slipping away.

Sarah dodged the lunging arms of the remaining marshal, slipping past the pillar and sprinting into the dim, narrow corridor behind Julian. The grand luxury of the mansion instantly gave way to the utilitarian plaster walls and concrete floors of the staff quarters—a stark, industrial underbelly that the Sterling family preferred to keep hidden from high-society guests.

"Julian! This way! The freight elevator is locked, but the maintenance stairs lead straight down to the underground garages!" Sarah called out, her heels clicking frantically against the concrete steps as they descended into the cool, damp shadows beneath the mansion.

Above them, heavy footsteps thundered against the ceiling as security guards and marshals swarmed the upper levels, their radios squawking static commands that echoed down the ventilation shafts. Julian’s chest burned from exertion, his legs aching from the earlier sprint across the foyer, but adrenaline fueled every stride.

"They're cutting off the main exit!" Julian yelled back over his shoulder, dodging a stack of old mahogany crates stored near the basement junction.

"Not if we take the old drainage tunnel," Sarah panted, her face slick with sweat. "My father built it during the seventies for emergency evacuations. The entrance is right through this utility closet."

Julian reached out, throwing open a heavy steel door marked with a faded hazard sign, only to find a shadowy figure standing silently in the doorway, blocking their only path to freedom.
