Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble Halls

The silence that followed Clara’s revelation was heavier than the massive bronze doors at the mansion’s entrance. Julian stood frozen, the infant resting quietly against his heart, completely unaware of the generational earthquake shaking the family foundation. He looked down at the tiny face, then back at Clara, whose hands were still trembling as she held the DNA results like a weapon. The numbers on the page didn't lie; science had pierced through the meticulously crafted lies of the Sterling dynasty in a matter of seconds.
"That's impossible," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with denial. "Our family records are absolute. Every birth, every death, every drop of blood is documented by the family archives."
"Archives can be forged, Julian," Clara retorted, taking a sharp step forward, her cream dress stained with dust from the marble floor. She thrust the paper toward him. "Look at it yourself. Match the mitochondrial markers. This baby is the granddaughter of the woman Elena banished in the winter of ninety-four."
Elena had not moved from the upper balcony. Her hands gripped the cold iron railing so tightly her knuckles turned chalk white. The iron-willed matriarch, who had ruled this estate with an unyielding iron fist for half a century, looked smaller now, trapped inside the architecture of her own deception.
"Julian, put the child down and come upstairs," Elena commanded, her voice regaining a fraction of its chilling composure, though a nervous twitch betrayed her lower lip. "You are listening to the ravings of a desperate woman who wants to tear this family apart for a settlement."
"Don't you dare gaslight him anymore, Elena!" Clara shouted, her voice bouncing off the marble pillars. "She isn't lying, Julian. I found the original adoption files hidden in the foundation stone of the East Wing library. Your grandmother didn't just abandon a child; she traded her for silence."

Julian slowly lowered his gaze to the paper in Clara's hand, his eyes scanning the genetic breakdown until they landed on the matching lineage code. The blood rushing in his ears drowned out the distant sound of the estate's security gates opening down the private drive. Someone else was arriving.
