Chapter 6 - The Federal Net

The silence in the grand foyer was broken only by the soft, rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock near the library entrance. Julian stood frozen, the infant resting against his chest, as the federal marshal took two measured steps onto the polished marble. The dark green suit that had felt like armor during his desperate sprint across the room now felt like a uniform of entrapment.
"There must be some mistake," Julian said, his voice tight with controlled fury. "I caught this child as she fell from that balcony. I am protecting my family."
"Your family records show no legal registration for this infant, Mr. Sterling," the marshal replied, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "And we have a signed affidavit from the primary estate trustee—Mrs. Elena Sterling—stating that an unauthorized individual attempted to abduct the minor from the premises."
Clara lunged forward, placing herself between Julian and the federal officers. "That's a complete fabrication! Elena pushed her own great-granddaughter off the balcony! We have audio logs, we have witnesses, we have the DNA results right here on the floor!"
The marshal glanced down at the brown envelope lying near Clara's feet, his expression completely unreadable. "Civil family disputes and genetic testing are matters for family court, ma'am. Our orders are explicit: secure the minor and detain anyone interfering with the estate's designated guardian."
Up on the balcony, Elena watched the unfolding scene with the detached coldness of a chess grandmaster observing a sacrifice. She rested her hands lightly on the iron railing, her white hair catching the morning sun like a halo of frost.
"Do as they say, Julian," Elena called down, her voice carrying an eerie calmness. "You are young, and you were manipulated by outsiders. The courts will be lenient if you cooperate and hand the child over to the proper authorities."
Sarah took a sharp step forward, her eyes blazing with a fury that had been suppressed for three decades. "Don't you dare touch him, marshal! That child is my flesh and blood, and that woman up there is a criminal who faked my death!"
The second marshal stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Sarah's shoulder to force her back. "Step away, ma'am, or you'll be joining them in custody for obstruction."
Julian looked down at the baby, who suddenly opened her tiny eyes and let out a soft, plaintive cry that pierced straight through his armor. He knew that if he handed her over to these officers, Elena's legal machinery would swallow the child whole, burying the truth forever in a maze of sealed injunctions and anonymous foster homes.

"I'm not giving her to anyone," Julian whispered, his muscles tensing as he prepared to break through the line of officers toward the hidden service doors behind the staircase.
