Chapter 11 - The Railway Junction

The blinding midday sun cut through the gray mist as Julian and Sarah emerged from the rusted mouth of the drainage tunnel, coughing slightly from the damp air as they scrambled up a grassy embankment toward the abandoned railway line. To their left, rusted iron tracks stretched endlessly toward the horizon, swallowed by overgrown weeds and wild brambles. To their right, an old brick maintenance shed offered temporary shelter from the open fields.
Julian carefully lowered himself against the weathered wooden wall of the shed, catching his breath while keeping the baby securely wrapped in his jacket. "We made it out of the estate grounds, but we're completely exposed out here in the open."
Sarah pulled out a burner phone she had tucked deep inside her trench coat pocket before leaving the mansion. Her hands were remarkably steady as she tapped in a sequence of ten numbers—an encrypted satellite frequency that hadn't been dialed in thirty years.
"Who are you calling?" Julian asked, wiping a smudge of dirt from his dark green suit sleeve.
"The only person outside of Henderson who knows where all the corporate bodies are buried," Sarah replied, holding the phone tightly to her ear. "Marcus Vance. He was my father's chief legal counsel before Elena engineered his firing and forced him into early retirement."
The phone rang twice before a gravelly, deeply cautious voice answered on the other end. "State your verification code."
"The winter solstice of ninety-four," Sarah answered without hesitation. "When the ice broke the bridge."
A heavy sigh echoed through the speaker. "I thought you were dead, Sarah. The whole city believed the lies your mother printed in the papers."
"I was legally dead, Marcus, but I'm standing right beside the tracks of the North Line with my daughter and my nephew Julian. And we have thirty seconds before Elena's private security traces this satellite ping."
"Listen to me very carefully," Marcus said, his tone turning razor-sharp. "Do not go to the city center. Elena has already frozen all standard banking accounts and flagged every passport associated with the Sterling name. If you want to take her down, you need to meet me at the old dry dock warehouse by the industrial harbor. Bring the DNA results and whatever else you managed to grab from the estate."
"We'll be there in twenty minutes," Sarah said, ending the call before the signal could be triangulated. She looked at Julian, her eyes hard with resolve. "Marcus has the physical ledgers. The ones that prove Elena systematically embezzled funds from our family trusts to build her modern empire."
Julian stood up, adjusting his grip on the infant, who was beginning to wake up and stir with quiet hunger. "Then let's finish this. No more running."

As they stepped away from the railway shed toward the main highway where a rusted pickup truck waited by the tree line, a sleek black helicopter bearing the Sterling logo swept silently over the treeline, banking sharply toward their exact coordinates.
