Chapter 7 - The Laugh in the Hallway

Julian froze with one foot inside the hidden stone stairwell, his flashlight beam trembling slightly against the damp masonry walls. Dr. Harris caught his shoulder, signaling for absolute silence. Clara pressed her back against the wall, her breathing shallow and ragged.

Outside Ethan’s bedroom door, the heavy footsteps paused right over the threshold. A hand rattled the brass knob again, testing the strength of the latch Julian had just failed to open from the inside. Then came the scratching sound of a key sliding into the deadbolt cylinder—a master key that only the head of security and the master of the house possessed.

"They're opening it," Clara whispered in sheer terror.

Julian pulled his foot back from the passage, gesturing for Dr. Harris and Clara to duck behind the heavy mahogany armoire they had just moved. Julian drew a small, heavy iron poker from the fireplace hearth nearby, gripping it with white-knuckled intensity. The deadbolt slid back with a loud, metallic clack, and the heavy oak door slowly swung inward.

The hallway light spilled into the dark room, casting a long, elongated shadow across the Persian rug. Standing in the doorway was a tall figure cloaked in a dark trench coat, wearing black leather gloves. The face was obscured by the low brim of a fedora, but the glint of a heavy signet ring caught the overhead light as the intruder raised a gloved hand.

"Julian," a distorted, electronic voice rasped from beneath the brim. "You're playing a dangerous game."

Julian didn't wait for introductions. With a guttural shout, he lunged forward from behind the armoire, swinging the iron poker in a wide, sweeping arc toward the intruder's head. The figure ducked with unnatural speed, the poker whistling harmlessly through empty air and striking the doorframe with a dull, echoing thud.

The intruder spun around, lashing out with a vicious kick that caught Julian squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward onto the shattered glass of the balcony doors. Pain flared across his ribs, but Julian refused to stay down. He pushed himself up, lunging again to grab the edge of the trench coat.

With a sharp rip of fabric, the coat tore away, revealing not Marcus, but a younger man with familiar, haunting facial features—features Julian hadn't seen in a mirror since childhood.
