Chapter 11 - The Detonator

The heavy silence inside the vault was absolute, save for the rhythmic beep-beep of the digital detonator in Marcus’s hand. Ethan let out a muffled sob through the tape over his mouth, his wide, tear-filled eyes locked desperately onto Julian.
"Marcus, put the detonator down. This has gone far enough," Julian said, holding his hands out in a placating gesture, stepping slowly into the circular stone chamber while keeping Dr. Harris just outside the doorway.
"I can't do that, sir," Marcus replied, his voice entirely devoid of remorse. "Robert offered me enough capital to set up a new life across the Atlantic. Loyalty doesn't pay the bills, Mr. Vance. Survival does."
"You think Robert will let you walk away with the money?" Julian pressed, his voice dropping into a calm, calculated rhythm designed to buy precious seconds. "My brother leaves a trail of bodies behind him. You're just another disposable tool to him."
Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickering toward the hallway where Dr. Harris stood silently watching. That microscopic moment of hesitation was all Julian needed. With explosive speed, Julian lunged forward, throwing his entire weight across the narrow gap between them just as Marcus’s thumb twitched toward the trigger.
A loud struggle erupted on the cold stone floor. Julian slammed his fist into Marcus’s jaw, knocking the digital detonator from the guard's grip. The small plastic device skidded across the tiles, coming to a halt near Dr. Harris’s polished shoes.
Dr. Harris swooped down instantly, snatching the detonator off the floor and rapidly punching in the master disarm code he had memorized years ago. The red flashing light on the device turned a steady, comforting green with a soft digital chirp.
Marcus, realizing he was defeated, slumped back against the stone pillar, spitting blood from a split lip. Julian didn't waste a second looking at him. He dropped to his knees beside Ethan, pulling a small pocketknife from his trousers and carefully slicing through the thick nylon cords binding the boy to the chair.
Julian ripped the tape from Ethan's mouth, pulling the trembling child into a fierce, protective embrace. "I've got you, Ethan. You're safe now."

Before Ethan could reply, a loud crash echoed from the sub-basement below, followed by Clara’s terrified scream ringing through the ventilation shafts.
