Chapter 1 - The Shattered Frosting

The oppressive silence of the grand hallway was broken only by the hum of the crystal chandelier overhead. Julian knelt beside the ruined dessert, his white blazer brushing against the polished marble floor. His chest heaved with suppressed fury, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of his dark shirt. Across from him, Clara the maid trembled slightly, her hands hovering helplessly above her crisp black-and-white apron. Between them sat seven-year-old Lilly, her curly brown hair framing a face entirely devoid of typical childhood panic. Her blue dress, adorned with a pristine white bow at the back, looked absurdly formal for the chaos at her feet.

"Lilly... What have you done?" Julian demanded, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, controlled heat that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

Lilly did not flinch, nor did she look down at the ruined slice of chocolate cake and its smudged white frosting. Instead, her small arm extended with absolute, unyielding precision. Her index finger pointed directly toward the shadowed arched doorway leading to the East Wing.

"Why did you do that, Lilly?" Julian pressed harder, leaning into her space, his bearded jaw clenching as his temper threatened to fracture completely.

"A man put white powder on Ethan's cake," Lilly said, her voice small yet eerily steady, cutting through the heavy air like a scalpel.

Julian’s breath hitched. The name Ethan sent a visible tremor through his frame. Ethan, his frail ten-year-old nephew, was upstairs resting. Julian’s gaze darted from the girl to the cake, the dark realization dawning with sickening velocity. His eyes widened in a sudden, blinding panic of paternal terror.

"Dr. Harris, test this now!" Julian roared, scrambling back as the middle-aged doctor in the dark suit stepped out from the shadows.

Dr. Harris knelt instantly, pulling a sleek blue testing pen from his breast pocket and pressing it against the white frosting. The tension in the room thickened, suffocating and absolute.

"It's positive. Concentrated poison," Dr. Harris whispered, his face pale as chalk.

Julian stared at the pen, then slowly turned his head to look up the grand staircase toward Ethan’s bedroom.
