Chapter 14 - Dawn at the Estate

The pale light of early dawn was beginning to filter through the towering arched windows of the grand hallway, washing away the crimson hue of the emergency strobes. Federal agents swarmed the mansion, escorting Marcus away in handcuffs while paramedics attended to Clara, who was conscious and resting on a velvet settee near the entrance.
Julian stood by the large crystal chandelier, his white blazer rumpled and stained with soot and dust, watching the quiet efficiency of the authorities restoring order to his home. Dr. Harris walked over, holding a warm cup of coffee, and handed it to Julian with a solemn nod of respect.
"Clara is going to be fine," Dr. Harris said softly. "Just a mild concussion. And Ethan is upstairs resting in his real bedroom, safe and sound."
Julian took the cup, wrapping his cold fingers around the ceramic warmth. "And Lilly?" he asked, looking around the grand hall.
"She's in the parlor drawing pictures with crayons," Dr. Harris smiled faintly. "Remarkable child, that one. Most kids would be traumatized for months after witnessing what she saw yesterday."
Julian looked down at the tiled floor where the dropped slice of chocolate cake and its smudged white frosting had started the entire chain of events. Forensic technicians had already bagged the evidence, scrubbing the marble clean, but Julian could still see the phantom outline of the tragedy that had almost consumed his family.
"She saved us all, Doctor," Julian whispered, taking a slow sip of the coffee. "If she hadn't spoken up when she did, none of us would be standing here right now."
Just then, the soft patter of small footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Julian turned to see Lilly walking toward him, wearing her blue dress and the white bow neatly tied at her back. She stopped a few feet away, looking up at him with her large, intelligent brown eyes.
"Is the bad man gone now, Julian?" Lilly asked quietly, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.

Julian knelt down to her eye level, a genuine, profound smile finally breaking through the exhaustion on his face.
